Probable Pitchers
Texas will give the ball to Spencer Howard, who will make his second start for the Rangers since being acquired from Philadelphia. The 25-year-old didn’t exactly impress his new team in his Texas debut, surrendering three runs in just 2.1 innings of work.
I had high hopes for Spencer Howard but maybe, just maybe it wasn’t Philly? pic.twitter.com/zizGGcAJqo

Short outings are nothing new to the right-hander, as he’s failed to make it out of the 5th inning in all eight starts this season. Howard was also hit hard in his final outing for Philly, allowing six hits and four runs over 3.2 innings, and he’s yet to record a quality start in 14 career opportunities.
The Mariners are no offensive juggernaut, ranking below league average in runs, average and slugging, but even they should be able to feast on Howard who’s yielding a 35% hard hit rate.
Howard vs Anderson
0-3 | Record | 5-8 |
6.16 | ERA | 4.35 |
1.54 | WHIP | 1.21 |
.239 | OBA | .247 |
1.8 | SO/W Ratio | 3.4 |
Seattle will counter with Tyler Anderson, who like Howard, is a recent addition to his team. The southpaw started 18 games in Pittsburgh before joining the Mariners, but his results have been underwhelming no matter which club he’s been pitching for.
He’s winless in his past three starts, and has earned just two victories in his past 13 outings. His first start for Seattle was against this same Texas squad two weeks ago, but he didn’t factor into the decision. Anderson coughed up six hits and three runs over 5.1 innings and was taken deep by Jonah Heim.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Rangers Batters | Batting Average vs Anderson | Mariners Batters | Batting Average vs Howard |
---|---|---|---|
Charlie Culberson | .375 | Abraham Toro | .000 |
Adolis Garcia | .333 | Mitch Haniger | .000 |
Jonah Heim | .500 | Kyle Seager | .000 |
Andy Ibanez | .500 | Ty France | .000 |
Isiah Kiner-Falefa | .250 | Jarred Kelenic | .000 |
Nathaniel Lowe | .333 | Jake Fraley | .000 |
Jason Martin | .000 | Cal Raleigh | .000 |
The 31-year-old was better in his second start for the Mariners however, holding the Yankees to two runs over 5 innings in another no decision. The Rangers are the worst offense in the AL, and have a lower OBP, and slugging percentage versus lefties than righties.
Rangers vs Mariners Pick
Entering play Wednesday, Texas has scored three or fewer runs in six of its past seven outings, and has been outscored 44-16 during that stretch. They’ve won just five games since the All-Star break, and 16 of their past 18 losses have been by at least two runs.
Their lineup has virtually zero pop, and we shouldn’t expect Howard to last more than three to four innings. At that point the Rangers bullpen will take over, but even they present a favorable matchup for the Mariners. Texas’ relievers boast the sixth highest ERA in the AL and the fourth lowest WAR.

Seattle meanwhile, is in the thick of the playoff race and play their best baseball at home. They’re 33-24 at T-Mobile Park this year, including 6-2 against the Rangers.
Pick: Mariners -1.5 (+105)
