Baseball’s greatest rivalry begins a new chapter this weekend, and if it’s anything like the last one, Boston Red Sox fans are in for a world of hurt.

The New York Yankees swept the BoSox two weekends ago, outscoring them by nine runs over a three-game set. The two rivals will square off again on Friday at 7:05 pm EST, and there’s no question who the favorite is.

Red Sox vs Yankees Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Boston Red Sox +287 +1.5 (+155) Over 9.0 (-110)
New York Yankees -325 -1.5 (-175) Under 9.0 (-110)

Odds taken Aug. 13th.

New York opened up as hefty -325 moneyline favorite in the MLB odds, in a game that features a total of 9. The Bronx Bombers are fresh off back-to-back victories, while Boston has dropped four straight, including an embarassing 17-8 decision to Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Cole Set to Cruise vs Red Sox

Life won’t get any easier for the Red Sox on Friday, as they’ll have to face preseason Cy Young favorite Gerrit Cole. The $300 million dollar man is off to a 3-0 start in pinstripes, and is fresh off a 10-strikeout performance against the Rays in just 4.2 innings.

Cole is allowing two runs per outing on average, and only three AL teams have scored fewer times than Boston. The Red Sox offense has been especially anemic on the road, scoring more than four runs in just three of eight games away from Fenway.

To add insult to injury, star shortstop Xander Bogaerts is day-to-day with lower body fatigue, while starting left fielder Andrew Benintendi is on the injured list with a strained rib cage.

Red Sox Career Stats vs Cole

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Alex Verdugo 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Xander Bogaerts 13 3 1 1 3 .231
J.D. Martinez 12 4 1 2 5 .333
Mitch Moreland 14 1 1 1 6 .071
Kevin Pillar 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Christian Vazquez 5 3 0 0 1 .600
Jackie Bradley Jr. 9 2 0 0 2 .222
Rafael Devers 5 0 0 0 3 .000
Jonathan Arauz 0 0 0 0 0 .000

Cole has yet to face Boston this season, but he is 2-1 versus them in five career starts. The last time he pitched against them at Yankee stadium was in June of 2019, when he went 7 innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven.

Beware of the Bronx Bombers

New York went through a brief dry spell offensively last week, but they’ve rebounded nicely. They racked up eight runs on Saturday versus Tampa Bay, and scored nine and six times in two games versus the Atlanta Braves, without Giancarlo Stanton who’s on the injured list.

On Friday, they’ll face a cast of Red Sox relievers in what manager Ron Roenicke is calling a “bullpen game”. No Boston starting pitcher has lasted longer than four innings outside of Nathan Eovaldi or Martin Perez, and that trend looks like it will continue.

Just one of Boston’s six victories were in games that Eovaldi or Perez didn’t start, and only the Diamondbacks and Tigers’ starting rotation has a worst ERA than the Red Sox.

To make matters worse, Boston’s relievers haven’t fared much better. After surrendering 10 runs to the Rays on Thursday, the Red Sox bullpen has now allowed 57 runs in 2020, which is the third most in the league.

Yankees Win Going Away

We’re not exactly breaking new ground predicting a New York victory, especially with arguably the best pitcher in the AL on the mound. However, the Yankees have a tendency to win games big and this Red Sox team is a train wreck right now.

11 of New York’s 12 wins this season have been by at least two runs, including all three against Boston. The Red Sox offense is sputtering which spells trouble against Cole, and Boston pitchers not named Eovaldi and Perez, can’t get anyone out in 2020. That certainly won’t change against the potent Yankee bats.

Pick: New York Yankees -1.5 (-175)
