Rockies Slumping at the Plate
After enjoying steady offensive production over the first week of the MLB season, the Rockies bats fell silent in this past weekend’s trip to San Francisco. Colorado hitters averaged an impressive 6.29 hits per game during a respectable 3-4 start to the campaign, but were able to muster just four total runs while being swept by the Giants in their three-game set.
Final: Giants 4, Rockies 0
The Giants finish off the sweep with their first shutout since September 13, 2019 (h/t @ChrisBabcock2). They improve to 6-3 behind Anthony DeSclafani's six shutout innings and homers from Alex Dickerson and Brandon Belt.

The upside for the Rockies during their series was the Giants was their improved defensive play. The club limited the Giants to just 3.67 runs per game, and an average of six runs per game, fueling what has become a reliable 7-1 run for the UNDER in totals betting. That low-scoring trend extends to recent dates with the Dodgers, with the under going 4-2 in their past six meetings, including two of four meetings at Coors Fields earlier this month to open the schedule.
Despite losing the series, the Rockies managed to keep things close, taking the season opener by an 8-5 score, and keeping things close in a pair of narrow losses to close out the set. However, consistent success at Dodger Stadium has eluded Colorado over the past three years.

Senzatela Looks to Atone
The Rockies earned a pair of wins in their final two road dates with Los Angeles last September. But they have otherwise been simply terrible when playing at Chavez Ravine, losing 17 of their previous 18 away meetings, with 14 of those defeats coming by multi-run margins.
Antonio Senzatela's night is done. He pitched eight scoreless innings. Three strikeouts, two walks. Threw 96 pitches. Best pitched game of the year for the Rockies so far. He threw the best pitched game last year too, their only complete game.

The task of shutting down the vaunted Dodgers lineup on Tuesday falls to Antonio Senzatela. The 26-year-old right-hander struggled badly vs LA in his first start of the season on April, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings of work in a lopsided 11-6 loss. However, Senzatela turned in a dramatically improved performance last time out, throwing 8.0 innings of four-hit shutout baseball in the Rockies’ 8-0 rout of Arizona.
Dodgers in Mid-Season Form
While the Rockies search for answers to their early slide, the Dodgers look to maintain their torrid pace out of the gate with a fourth straight victory. Los Angeles has been steady at bat and in the field. In addition to opening the week ranked third in the majors in runs scored, the club has also slammed the door on opposing hitters.
The Dodgers are 8-2. They swept the Nationals without Mookie Betts or Cody Bellinger. Impressive stuff.

The Dodgers have given up more than three runs just once since the end of their season-opening series with Colorado, and held Washington to just five total runs, and shutting out the Nationals twice, during last weekend’s three-game series sweep.
Rockies Career Stats vs Bauer
Player | AVG | AB | HR | RBI |
---|---|---|---|---|
Charlie Blackmon | .333 | 9 | 1 | 4 |
CJ Cron | .083 | 12 | 0 | 1 |
Elias Diaz | 1.000 | 2 | 0 | 0 |

Garrett Hampson | .000 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Sam Hilliard | .000 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Ryan McMahon | .333 | 3 | 1 | 2 |

Trevor Story | .286 | 7 | 0 | 0 |

Turner, Bauer Lead the Attack
Offensively, Justin Turner has led the attack. The Dodgers third baseman has banged out multiple hits in four of his past seven outings, and ranks second in the NL with five doubles to date. Turner also recorded three hits off of Senzatela in the team’s recent 11-6 win over Colorado.

In addition, Los Angeles will be sending Trevor Bauer to face the Rockies for the second time this season. It was Bauer who earned the win in the Rockies’ recent lopsided win at Coors Field, and now has the opportunity to top Senzatela for a second time in less than two weeks. The colorful 30-year-old followed up that victory with another steady outing last Wednesday, giving up just three hits and two earned runs to the Oakland A’s over 6.2 innings, but came away with no decision after Oakland rallied to earn a 4-3 loss in 10 innings.
The Picks: Dodgers -1.5 (-160); UNDER 8 (-110)
