Everyone expected the Rockies (6-17, 3-10 away) to struggle this season, but nobody predicted things would be this bad this quickly. Colorado has dropped 11 of 12 entering play on Monday, and boast the fewest wins in the National League.

Online sportsbooks don’t expect the Rockies to turn things around anytime soon, as they pegged Colorado as a massive underdog versus the Guardians in Monday’s MLB odds.

Colorado vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers

You’ll have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to find the Rockies name in the World Series odds. They’re tied with the A’s for the longest odds to win the title, and are projected to lose over 100 games this season.

Colorado will give the ball to Austin Gomber on Monday, who’s been an absolute punching bag for enemy hitters. Gomber is fresh off a 2 inning start versus the Pirates, where he coughed up nine hits and nine runs.

That marked his third straight outing where he’s issued at least five runs, and he’s failed to make it out of the 5th inning in three straight performances.

Fortunately for him, the Guardians feature one of the lowest scoring MLB lineups, but everyone he’s faced so far has found success.

Gomber vs Quantrill Stats

0-4 Record 1-1
12.12 ERA 4.15
2.14 WHIP 1.43
.356 OBA .275
1.3 SO/W Ratio 2.2

Cleveland (11-11, 3-6 home) will counter with Cal Quantrill, who looked more like his old self in his previous outing. Quantrill was hit hard in his first three starts of the season, but pitched excellently in a 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

The 28-year-old didn’t allow a run through 6 innings, surrendering only four hits, while striking out four. He entered this season with a 23-8 record over 56 career starts for the Guardians, and he’s expected to eat a heavy dose of innings in 2023 as the team’s number two starter.

Quantrill has had a lot of success versus current Rockies hitters in the past, holding them to a .208/.296/.292 slash line over 48 at-bats.

Rockies vs Guardians Betting Stats

Cleveland’s lineup ranks 23rd in scoring. As underwhelming as that is, Colorado’s has been even worse. The Rockies have scored three runs or less in nine of their past 10 outings, and have been especially bad away from friendly Coors Field this season.

Colorado is averaging only 3.1 runs per game as visitors, posting a batting average that is .71 points lower than at home. They’re slugging percentage drops over .100 points on the road compared to at home, while their OPS dips .171 points. To make matters worse, Kris Bryant, one of their biggest bats, left Saturday’s game early and is no guarantee to play against the Guardians.

Cleveland meanwhile, broke out of their offensive funk on Sunday, crossing the plate seven times against the Marlins. They smacked 13 hits, and got home runs from both Jose Ramirez and Josh Bell, who project to be their two biggest bats.

Ramirez, who drove in 126 runs in 2022, is off to a slow start to the season but is starting to turn things around. He’s hit two home runs and driven in seven runs over his past four games, after going deep only once in his first 18 contests.

Rockies vs Guardians Predictions

Both Bell and Ramirez will hit from the right side on Monday, and Gomber has struggled badly versus hitters from that side of the plate. He’s issued a .661 slugging percentage and 1.073 OPS to right-handed bats this season, coughing up 22 hits in only 62 at-bats.

Austin Gomber vs Right-Handed Bats

AB R HR AVG SLG OPS
62 18 3 .355 .661 1.073

The Rockies were outscored 17-9 while getting swept by the Phillies over the weekend, and have a minus-43 run differential over their last 12 outings. They rank bottom-four in the NL in virtually every key offensive category, and that’s despite playing half their games in baseball’s most hitter friendly park.

Cleveland is certainly no juggernaut, but they have more than enough offensive talent to take advantage of Gomber. Expect them to jump all over him early, and for Quantrill to hold the lowly Colorado bats in check.

Pick: Cleveland Guardians -0.5 Runs First 5 Innings (-135)
