  • The San Francisco Giants are slight road favorites over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night
  • The Giants send Logan Webb (7-3, 2.84) to the mound to face Huascar Ynoa (4-3, 2.89)
  • The odds and pitching matchups can be found below with a prediction

The MLB-best San Francisco Giants — who have not lost a series in over a month — take on the Atlanta Braves in a possible postseason series preview at 7:20 pm ET Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Truist Park.

Manager Gabe Kapler’s club has defied baseball experts all season, with San Fran owning a big league-best 84-45 record entering the series in Georgia Friday. The NL West leaders have gone 19-6 in August and just swept the Mets in Queens. Meantime, Atlanta has been nearly as good in the dog days, going 17-6 this month ahead of the series opener. Even though they are the road team, the Giants are slight favorites.

Probable Pitchers

On the mound, San Francisco’s Logan Webb (7-3, 2.84) faces Huascar Ynoa (4-3, 2.89).

Webb has been a gem in an emerging Giants rotation this season, tossing ten quality starts in 18 rotation turns in 2021. He’s been especially splendid over the last month, throwing six straight quality starts — with all but one (Colorado) against teams either leading their division or in the playoff hunt.

The Giants have gone 5-1 in that stretch and Webb personally owns a 3-0 mark and 1.70 ERA in that timeframe.

Webb vs Ynoa Key Stats

Logan Webb
VS
Huascar Ynoa
7-3 Record 4-3
2.84 ERA 2.89
3.41 xERA 4.42
1.13 WHIP 1.00
3.75 SO/W 4.85

The 24-year-old has been at his best against the best this season, as San Francisco has gone 3-0 against the arch rival LA Dodgers in his three starts. The right-hander hasn’t faced Atlanta this season, but is coming off a six-inning, five-hit, one-earned run, one-walk and seven-strikeout effort against the A’s last Sunday in a 2-1 Giants win.

Webb is 2-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 10 road starts this season. In 11 night game starts, he has a 3-2 record and 2.61 ERA.

Meanwhile, the Braves will turn to Ynoa instead of Drew Smyly. Half of Ynoa’s ten starts this season have been quality ones, including his turn Monday against the Yankees. Ynoa went six innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out nine in an eventual 5-1 Atlanta loss.

The 23-yer-old is 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in five starts at home in 2021. He’s 4-1 with a 1.35 ERA in eight night game starts.

October Preview?

The matchup of division leaders Sunday features several players who are swinging the bat well lately — just not against the projected starters.

No probable Braves hitter Saturday has faced Webb, while only Kris Bryant has faced Ynoa. San Fran’s big trade deadline acquisition went 2-for-5 against the Dominican as a member of the Cubs between a pair of games with the Braves.

The 2016 NL MVP went deep Thursday against the Mets and has nine home runs, 25 RBI and a .274 batting average over 37 games against Atlanta in his career.

Brandon Belt and Lamonte Wade Jr. have also put up solid stats over the last week, combining for five home runs and nine RBI, while going 9-for-32 (.281) at the plate in the last four games prior to Friday’s series opener.

A trio of Atlanta hitters are hitting over .300 in the last four games ahead of the three-game set with San Fran. Austin Riley leads the way, going 6-for-15 (.400) in that timeframe.

He’s joined by Jorge Soler and Dansby Swanson. Each player has gone deep one time in the stretch, with Swanson driving in five runs — the most of the bunch — with an OPS of 1.130. Swanson and Riley are the left half of a particularly skilled group  around the bases.

Giants vs Braves Pick

So, who wins it Saturday? Ynoa was a tough-luck loser Monday against the sizzling hot New York Yankees. Meantime, it’s difficult to ever bet against the Giants this season — and especially Webb of late. As noted above, he’s been practically unhittable over the last three-and-a-half months.

With neither lineup having experience against the projected starters, this one comes down to pitching. After Webb, the Giants bullpen has been lights out for the most part this season. That’s why I’m leaning toward the road favorites in this spot.

The Pick: Giants -130
