Playing the final game of their season-opening three-game set, the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees matchup on Sunday April 4th 2021. The game is due to start at 1:05pm ET. Most projections tab these two as the main contenders for the American League East crown in 2021. This first series is just a taster of what could develop into an intriguing rivalry throughout the season.

Blue Jays vs Yankees odds have favored the New Yorkers throughout this series, and that’s not going to change for Sunday’s game.

With Steven Matz and Tanner Roark lined up for the Rangers series, TJ Zeuch will start for the Blue Jays on Sunday. Domingo German will be on the mound for the Yankees.

German Returns

German was an unknown for the Yankees ahead of Spring Training. Having not pitched in a Major League game for 16 months, Aaron Boone and German’s teammates were pleasantly surprised by his effectiveness. Aaron Judge was impressed by the snap on the breaking pitches and the command and velocity on the fastball. The sharp-looking stuff was rewarded with great outings, too.

Across four Spring starts, German pitched 13 superb innings, walking just one, allowing only two earned runs and striking out 17. In a Yankees rotation short on guarantees behind Gerrit Cole, German could have a big role to play in 2021.

The numbers against Toronto are good, too. German has five appearances, including three starts, against the Jays for a 3.10 ERA. Toronto’s line-up has obviously been through significant change over the last couple of seasons, however, and it will be interesting to see how German pitches to the dangerous young talents.

Pressure On Zeuch

With just four Major League starts to his name, all eyes are on TJ Zeuch. Injuries have created this opportunity for Zeuch, but it’s hardly the easiest line-up to make an impression. This Yankees team is stacked offensively. Zeuch, though, had two solid outings against the Yankees in September last season, giving up just two runs in 6.1 innings.

This is unlikely to be a deep start from the 25-year-old. Toronto will be wary of letting him go through the order for a third time, which could make for a real test of the Jays’ bullpen. Zeuch is a soft-thrower, leaning on mainly his cutter and slider with a very occasional changeup.

Julian Merryweather headlined a strong bullpen performance in the season opener. Toronto may need a similar effort if they are to compete in this one. This Yankees line-up possesses the plate discipline to force him out of the game early on.

Yankees Career Stats vs Zeuch

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Clint Frazier 4 0 0 0 1 .000
Brett Gardner 4 2 0 0 1 .500
Aaron Hicks 3 2 0 0 0 .667

Gary Sanchez 2 1 1 1 0 .500
Giancarlo Stanton 5 2 0 1 1 .400

Yankees To Cover

The Spring Training performances of German make it hard to look past a Yankees win. The 28-year-old was dominant, and should be able to keep this talented Blue Jays offense relatively quiet. Where some pitchers take a while to get going, German has shown no such issues throughout his career. He gave up just five earned runs in his first 25.2 innings back in 2019.

Zeuch’s history against the Yankees will give Jays fans some hope, but it’s a big ask to expect anything more than three or four innings. A lot will fall on the bullpen. If the Yankees can get to Zeuch early on, this could become a blowout.

Pick: Yankees -1.5
