Despite their recent struggles, the Athletics opened as a -170 moneyline favorite, in a game that features a total of 8.5.

First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 pm ET at the Oakland Coliseum, with clear skies and 57 degree night time temperatures in the forecast.

Probable Pitchers

Oakland will give the ball to Frankie Montas, while Chicago will counter with former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel.

Montas has pitched very well for the A’s this season, allowing three runs or less in 12 straight starts, posting shutout performances in two of his past three outings. The 28-year-old has already set career-highs in wins (11), innings (156.2), and strikeouts (174), while yielding the lowest hard hit rate (31.1%) of his career.

He’s faced the White Sox once this season, scattering eights and three runs over 5 innings, en route to a 5-2 defeat last month. Since that start, he’s surrendered just three runs in 20.2 innings, while posting a 22-6 strikeout-to-walk rate.

Keuchel vs Montas

A matchup with the White Sox is imposing, as they are the AL’s fifth highest scoring team, and have plated at least six runs in five of their past nine contests.

As for Keuchel, the results lately have not been encouraging. The lefty has issued six runs in three straight starts, failing to make it out of the 4th inning in back-to-back outings. Last Friday against KC, the AL’s third lowest scoring team, he last just 3 innings in a 7-2 defeat.

He’s on pace for his worst statistical season since his rookie campaign, posting a career worst xERA (6.02), and HR/9 rate (1.48).

Interestingly enough, his lone victory since the All-Star break came at home against Oakland last month. He surrendered five hits and two runs over 5 innings, marking the only time in his past five starts he’s yielded fewer than four runs.

At this point, we should be looking to bet against Keuchel whenever we can. He appears broken, with no solution in sight, and if he fails again tonight, the White Sox might have no choice but to remove him from the rotation.

Dallas Keuchel is like the 7th best SP option on this team right now. Both Lopez & Kopech going 3-4 innings a start would be better than anything Keuchel can give them.

The Athletics moneyline price is a bit steep, so instead think about targeting their team total. Each of Keuchel’s last three outings have produced totals of 9 or higher, as have seven of his past 10 starts. Five of the A’s past seven contests have produced double-digit totals, and a date with Keuchel is the recipe for another high scoring affair.
