The Chicago White Sox (79-58, 33-34 away) take a trip out West to begin a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics (74-63, 37-31 home) on Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 9:40 PM EST. Chicago just dropped two of three to the Kansas City Royals, while the A’s were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays.

The White Sox have recalled Jimmy Lambert to start the series opener. Oakland on the other hand will counter with right-hander James Kaprielian.

Probable Pitchers

Lambert will make his third start of 2021 and his first since May 31st after Lucas Giolito went on the IL. the righty has mainly pitched with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights this season, posting a 4.98 ERA in 18 appearances. With the White Sox, Lambert has tossed just eight innings and has a 9.00 ERA.

In his last start in May, the 26-year-old went just 3.2 innings after giving up three earned runs to the Cleveland Indians. Given the injuries that Chicago is dealing with right now in their rotation, they desperately need a good outing here from Lambert.

Lambert vs Kaprielian

James Kaprielian
0-1 Record 7-4
9.00 ERA 3.87
8.0 Innings Pitched 97.2
8 SO 99
4 BB 37

Kaprielian has been relatively solid for the Athletics this season, going 7-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 18 starts. However, his last two outings were rough, to say the least. On September 1st, the Detroit Tigers tagged him for four runs in just four frames. Prior to that, the 27-year-old was lit up by the New York Yankees for six runs. They also went deep three times off him. In fact, Kaprielian has allowed five home runs in his last two appearances.

On a more positive note though, the former Yankees farmhand has pitched a mile better at the Oakland Coliseum, compiling a 2.44 ERA in eight starts. Kaprielian has never faced the White Sox in his short big-league career, but he has excelled more against AL Central opponents in 2021. With the A’s now dropping into third place in the West, Kaprielian must put together a quality outing here before their playoff hopes slide away completely.

White Sox Offense Needs to Break Out

Chicago is one of the best offensive teams in the big leagues but they were rather inconsistent against the Royals over the weekend. While they did win game two 10-7, the White Sox managed to score just a pair of runs in the other two contests while being shut out in the series finale.

However, it’s not like there’s a lot of pressure on this team right now, with a comfortable 10-game lead in the American League Central. The division crown is basically a foregone conclusion right now, but with their pitching staff severely depleted, the bats need to be firing on all cylinders with some key arms on the IL.

Playoff Hopes Slipping for Oakland

The A’s have really been struggling, going 4-6 in their last 10 games. While it was a hard-fought series, Oakland lost three straight to Toronto and was even blanked 8-0 in the series finale on Sunday.

Now, the Athletics find themselves a half-game behind the Mariners and 3.5 games out in the Wild Card race, with the Jays and M’s also battling it out with them. It’s going to come down to the wire as to who claims the WC spots, but Oakland really needs to start winning ball games.

The A’s have managed to win just four of their last 14 contests, which has hurt any chance at catching the Astros, who were actually sliding for a moment as well. Lately, pitching has been the real problem as they blew a massive lead in Toronto and have frankly been giving up too many runs. Although Oakland doesn’t play great at home, this series is a chance to jump on the White Sox with their top arms out of the picture for the time being.

White Sox vs Athletics Prediction

Lambert hasn’t proven much in the major leagues and Kaprielian has been lights out at home.

With that being said,  I like the Athletics here to break out of their losing streak with an important victory.

Pick: Oakland Athletics moneyline (-115)
