In one of the most important series of the entire season, the New York Yankees (86-67, 41-34 away) visit the Boston Red Sox (88-65, 49-29 home) on Friday for the first of a three-game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST at Fenway Park.
As it stands right now, the Yanks sit in the final Wild Card spot, sitting two games behind Boston. However, it’s extremely tight, with the Blue Jays a half-game back of NY.
For the opener, The Bronx Bombers will send Gerrit Cole to the hill, with Boston handing Nathan Eovaldi the ball.

Probable Pitchers
Cole has undoubtedly been the ace of this Yankees rotation this season, going 15-8 with a sharp 3.03 ERA. He’s also third in the entire Majors with 231 strikeouts in just 169.1 innings of work. However, the hard-throwing righty is coming off a rather dismal outing that was very unlike him. He was absolutely torched by the Cleveland Indians, lasting just 5.2 frames after giving up 10 hits, seven earned, and two long balls.
However, prior to that start, Cole had surrendered a maximum of two runs in his previous six outings.

The Red Sox are a lineup that he is very familiar with, having already faced them three times in 2021. However, Boston’s potent offense has hit him around, with Cole compiling a rough 5.06 ERA. But, the 31-year-old has a 1.86 ERA in night games. New York desperately needs a good start out of Cole here as they look to extend their win streak.
It’s also important to note that, even though Alex Cora’s squad has done damage against him this season, he holds a career 3.74 ERA versus Boston.
Cole vs Eovaldi
15-8 | Record | 10-8 |
3.03 | ERA | 3.58 |
169.1 | Innings Pitched | 173.2 |
231 | SO | 188 |
38 | BB | 30 |
Eovaldi has also been the leading catalyst for a Red Sox rotation that hasn’t been great. He’s thrown a team-high 173.2 innings while posting a 10-8 record and 3.58 ERA. Despite having control issues in the past, the right-hander has been dominant with his command, striking out 188 and walking only 30 batters.

In his last start, Eovaldi allowed three earned across five innings against the Orioles while racking up eight K’s. While it wasn’t a fantastic outing, he’s been very impressive this month, compiling 2.70 ERA in four appearances. Eovaldi has already pitched against the Yankees five times this season, going 2-1 with a terrific 2.01 ERA. They have a very hard time hitting off him. The veteran also pitches great at Fenway with a 2.99 ERA in 2021.

Christian Arroyo | .500 | Joey Gallo | .000 |

Bobby Dalbec | .000 | Kyle Higashioka | .1000 |
Rafael Devers | .188 | Aaron Judge | .368 |
Enrique Hernandez | .400 | DJ LaMahieu | .385 |

Travis Shaw | .176 | Gio Urshela | .250 |
Christian Vazquez | .250 | Luke Voit | .364 |
Alex Verdugo | .364 | Tyler Wade | .000 |
After a COVID-19 outbreak left their roster severely depleted just weeks ago, the Red Sox have bounced back and won seven straight games. They just swept the Orioles and Mets, capping off the finale against New York with a 12-5 victory. Kyle Schwarber clubbed two homers, while Chris Sale tossed five stellar innings. Boston’s offense is clicking on all cylinders right now, hitting a mind-boggling .337 across the last five contests.

The Yanks are also enjoying an unbeaten run as well, winning three straight against the lowly Texas Rangers. It was exactly what New York needed after back-to-back embarrassing losses to Cleveland.
While this Red Sox series will be a tall task, Friday’s opener is arguably the biggest challenge because of just how well Eovaldi has pitched against them. The Yankees scored 18 runs across the last three contests though and will be looking to carry their hot bats into Fenway.

Yankees vs Red Sox Prediction
Two top-tier arms on the mound make it tough to call. It’s hard to imagine Cole having another bad start, but the Red Sox see the ball extremely well off him. It’s going to be a close one, but I’m giving Boston the upper hand here behind a gem from Eovaldi.
Pick: Boston Red Sox moneyline (-105)
