Dana White’s Contender Series has been must-watch TV for MMA fans who have had the chance to see future UFC stars earn their way into the promotion. The show has produced the likes of Sean O’Malley, Maycee Barber, Geoff Neal, Edmen Shahbazyan, and Ryan Spann among countless others.

After a successful Week 1, the second episode of season five happens on Tuesday, September 7th at 8 PM EST at the UFC Apex. In the main event, Josh Quinlan takes on Logan Urban at welterweight.

Does Quinlan Remain Undefeated?

Josh Quinlan (5-0) is undefeated as a pro and an amateur who has been fighting in LFA. In his career, the 28-year-old has finished all five of his wins, with three coming by KO/TKO. When he was an amateur, he knocked out Ryder Newman in 19 seconds, Newman of course, was on this past season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Logan Urban (5-1), meanwhile, is taking this fight on just two days’ notice as he took the fight on Sunday. The 27-year-old has been competing in Ohio and like Quinlan, also has finished all five of his fights, with three of them by KO/TKO. However, he hasn’t fought the highest level of competition which is a concern.

Both Quinlan and Urban are very well-rounded and I expect this fight to be a mix of striking and grappling. Urban will likely come out strong in the first round as he does have two first-round finishes and his lone loss is by first-round stoppage. His cardio is also a concern as he only had two days to prepare, but for the most part, he will be trying to cut weight.

Ultimately, I believe Quinlan will be able to survive the early onslaught from Urban and then get some timely takedowns and clinch Urban on the fence to wear him down. Once the second round hits, I expect Quinlan to come out aggressive as Urban will begin to slow down, and eventually, Quinlan will land a combination that hurts Urban and will find the finish by TKO. The victory will also be enough for him to get a contract.

Pick: Josh Quinlan (-290)

Other DWCS Week 2 Picks:

  1. Chidi Njokuani (+100): Njokuani is a Bellator veteran who has headlined several of their shows. I expect him to stuff the takedowns and piece up Sousa on the feet to win a decision but not enough for a contract.
  2. Saimon Oliveira (-225): Oliveira will be able to avoid the power shots and use his wrestling to take Alday down and eventually will find the submission and earn a UFC deal.
  3. Bruno Korea (-180): Korea fought in the UFC back in 2015 and had one fight and was released. In this fight, he should be able to get Vergara down and get the submission and a UFC deal.
  4. Muin Gafurov (-235): Gafurov is the better striker and will outland Anheliger and likely earn a decision but will not be enough for a UFC deal.
