The UFC remains at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, for UFC Vegas 33 on July 31. The fight was supposed to happen next week at UFC 265 but was moved a week early to headline the card.

The co-main event sees top-10 heavyweights collide as Shamil Abdurakhimov takes on Chris Daukaus. The fight was supposed to happen last week, but a positive COVID-19 case in Abdurakhimov’s camp pushed the scrap back a week. UFC Vegas 33 main card airs live on ESPN at 9 PM EST. Does The Winner Get a Top-Five Opponent?

Uriah Hall vs Sean Strickland isn’t the best main event in terms of name value, but this should be a terrific fight. Hall is a flashy kickboxer who has KO power but has been more patient and more technical as of late. Strickland, meanwhile, is a pure boxer who has heavy hands and talks trash to his opponents while he is fighting.

Hall & Strickland Recent Fights

Hall
VS
Strickland
Chris Weidman, win by TKO (leg injury) Fight 1 Krzysztof Jotko, win by decision
Anderson Silva, win by TKO Fight 2 Brendan Allen, win by TKO
Antonio Carlos Junior, win by split decision Fight 3 Jack Marshman, win by decision
Bevon Lewis, win by KO Fight 4 Nordine Taleb, win by TKO

Strickland has looked better than ever since he returned to the Octagon back on Halloween night. Strickland was involved in a major motorcycle accident that nearly killed him. He was left unconscious for hours and didn’t wake up until he was in the hospital and had immediate surgery. After the surgery, doctors told him his career was over, but after an intense 22-month recovery, he returned in October and got a decision win over Marshman. He fought again two weeks later, and then after a win over Jotko, he earned his way into this fight against Hall.

Hall, meanwhile, has looked like a different fighter since changing camps and going to Fortis MMA. His last fight was supposed to be a breakout one, but Weidman broke his leg on the first leg kick he threw. Now, he gets a tough test in the rising contender in Strickland.

Hall & Strickland Stats

Hall
VS
Strickland
36 Age 30
6’0″ Height 6’1″
79.5″ Reach 76″
8 UFC finishes 4

This is a very intriguing fight and one that I expect to take place on the feet. Since moving up to middleweight in his return from the motorcycle accident, he has looked phenomenal and he even told me he had nearly 0 percent body fat when he fought at welterweight, and the weight cut was hurting him.

Early on, I do expect them to have a feeling-out process, especially now that it is five rounds which Strickland has never done in his UFC career. Strickland will likely come out aggressive and try and get Hall out of there early as Hall is a slow-starter and someone who struggles when people put pressure on him.

Ultimately, I expect Strickland to use his boxing and piece up Hall for the first and second rounds. Yet, I expect Hall to make some adjustments and then start to take over with his kicks and start to tire out Strickland and get a late TKO win. If he doesn’t get the stoppage, I think he can win a decision. At +175, Hall is being offered at great value early in the week in the UFC Vegas 33 odds.

Pick: Uriah Hall (+175)

Will Daukaus Continue His Rise?

Chris Daukaus is 3-0 in the UFC with three first-round knockouts and now gets a top-10 opponent in Shamil Abdurakhimov, who hasn’t fought since September 2019 at UFC 242.

Abdurakhimov & Daukaus Recent Fights

Abdurakhimov
VS
Daukaus
Curtis Blaydes, loss by TKO Fight 1 Aleksei Oleinik, win by TKO
Marcin Tybura, win by TKO Fight 2 Rodrigo Nascimento, win by KO
Andrei Arlovski, win by decision Fight 3 Parker Porter, win by TKO
Chase Sherman, win by TKO Fight 4 Danny Holmes, win by TKO

Daukaus, who is also a full-time Philadelphia police officer, looks the real deal and is the perfect fight for him to get into the top-15.

I expect Daukaus to come out aggressive and not let Abdurakhimov get his momentum as it’s his first fight in nearly two years. Once Daukaus lands something big he will continue to pour it on him and get the first-round TKO win.

Pick: Chris Daukaus (-192)

Other UFC Vegas 33 Picks:

  1. Cheyanne Buys (-190): Buys should be able to pick apart de Paula on the feet and mix in her grappling to win a decision.
  2. Kyung Ho Kang (-140): Kang is making his return after nearly two years away, and I think he’ll be able to keep it standing and piece up Yahya and win a decision.
  3. Roman Kopylov (-240): I’m surprised the UFC gave Alvey another fight as he’s winless in his last six, and I expect Kopylov to TKO Alvey.
  4. Bryan Barberena (-260): I have concerns about Witt’s chin, and I think Barberena catches it early and gets a first or second-round TKO.
