Can Rodriguez Pull Off the Upset?

Max Holloway is considered by many fans a legitimate title contender, as at UFC 251 he lost a controversial split decision to Alexander Volkanovski. Although he isn’t the champ, he put on a dominant performance over Calvin Kattar in January and now will take on Yair Rodriguez.

Holloway & Rodriguez Recent Fights

Holloway
VS
Rodriguez
Calvin Kattar, win by decision Fight 1 Jeremy Stephens, win by decision
Alexander Volkanovski, loss by split decision (title fight) Fight 2 Jeremy Stephens, No Contest
Alexander Volkanovski, loss by decision (title fight) Fight 3 Korean Zombie, win by KO
Frankie Edgar, win by decision (title fight) Fight 4 Frankie Edgar, loss by TKO

Rodriguez has not fought since September of 2019 due to injuries as well as a USADA suspension for not telling the drug agency his whereabouts which caused him to miss tests. In his return, he gets a tough fight against Holloway,  who is arguably the best boxer in the UFC and has a relentless pace.

Holloway & Rodriguez Stats

Holloway
VS
Rodriguez
29 Age 29
5’11” Height 5’11”
69″ Reach 71″
11 UFC Finishes 3

The fight should remain standing for the entire time as Holloway is a boxer while Rodriguez is a kickboxer and likes to use flashy spinning kicks and punches. The Mexican does have KO power and that is likely the only way he will win this fight, as his cardio won’t be able to match Holloway’s. Neither will his output, as the Hawaiian throws a ton of volume and breaks down his opponents.

Holloway has a great chin and has rarely even been rocked. I expect Holloway to just piece up Rodriguez on the feet and in the third or fourth round, inflict enough damage and pace to earn the TKO win. Look for Holloway inside the distance prop to find better value than laying the -650, or you can parlay him with another fighter or two on the card.

Pick: Max Holloway (-650)

Who Wins the Co-Main Event?

A heavyweight fight between Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio de Lima serves as the co-main event as they both look to make it two in a row.

Rothwell & de Lima Recent Fights

Rothwell
VS
de Lima
Chris Barnett, win by submission Fight 1 Maurice Greene, win by decision
Marcin Tybura, loss by decision Fight 2 Alexandr Romanov, loss by submission
Ovince Saint Preux, win by split decision Fight 3 Ben Sosoli, win by TKO
Stefan Struve, win by KO Fight 4 Stefan Struve, loss by submission

If you like trends, de Lima has alternated wins and losses in his last 11 appearances in the UFC, and given he is coming off a win, a loss seems likely. In all seriousness, this is a tough matchup for the Brazilian as Rothwell is very durable and is tough to get down, so I expect this fight to remain standing.

On the feet, Rothwell doesn’t throw a ton of volume but he should be able to piece up de Lima and do enough to win a decision.  -140 odds are short enough to play straight up, but if you want more value, Rothwell by decision and the over in this fight is worth a look.

Pick: Ben Rothwell (-140)

Other UFC Vegas 42 Picks & Odds Boosts

Let’s take a look at the best UFC Vegas 42 odds boosts from all sportsbooks:

Here are some of our favorite UFC Vegas 42 bets for the rest of the main card:

  1. Felicia Spencer (-290): Spencer’s grappling will be too much for Letson as she’ll be able to take her down and either find the submission or get a ground and pound TKO. She can be parlayed with Holloway to lower the Hawaiian’s odds.
  2. Kyle Daukaus (-225): Daukaus should be able to keep the fight standing and just piece up Dolidze on the feet to earn a clear-cut decision.
  3. Song Yadong (-135): Yadong is a great striker and should be able to outstrike Arce and either get a TKO win or a decision victory.
