Two of the Eastern Conference’s best teams face-off on January 7th. The Philadelphia 76ers are favored by 2.5 points over a Brooklyn team without Kevin Durant and Spencer Dinwiddie. Philly comes in with the best record in the NBA, but they are also playing on the second night of a back-to-back following their Wednesday win over the Wizards.

Brooklyn started brightly, recording heavy wins over Boston and Golden State, but they have been inconsistent of late. Steve Nash’s team are currently 4-4, tied with the Cavaliers and Hawks in the middle of the East.

Curry Stays Hot

Seth Curry has been shooting the lights out. While shooting near 60% from three is unsustainable, Curry’s performances this season are not out of the ordinary. He owns the second-best career three-point percentage in NBA history, and he shone alongside Luka Doncic on the Dallas Mavericks last season.

Curry’s point totals have crept up as the season has progressed. He’s up to 14.5 now, and it’s easy to see why. The journeyman guard has gone over 14.5 in five of his eight games, including in four of his last five. Curry made five threes in the first quarter on Wednesday night on his way to a 28-point outing against the Wizards.

It’s unfair to brand Curry as a catch-and-shoot gunner. His quick release from such opportunities has been vital to the Sixers, but he’s a much more adept scorer than that. Close out too fast, and Curry has the handle to pump and go. He’s got a nice floater game, and good touch at the basket to finish over bigger defenders – he’s 97th percentile in field goal percentage on short mid-range attempts this season.

The former Portland Trail Blazer is a wonderful fit next to Embiid and Simmons. He gets lots of good looks, and often receives the ball as the defense scrambles following an Embiid double team or heavy help on a Simmons drive.

The Nets, like most defenses, do not have the personnel to play one-on-one with Embiid and Simmons. Curry will be the beneficiary – he should cruise past 14.5 points.

  • Pick: Seth Curry over 14.5 points (-118)

LeVert the Creator

Caris LeVert bounced back in the win over Utah. He had scored 24 points across the three previous games, going 11-for-36 from the field. The 24 points against the Jazz were scored on 18 shots – LeVert is getting good volume this year, and that is exaggerated further by the absence of Kevin Durant.

Brooklyn has tended to use LeVert or Kyrie Irving. Of their 10 most used lineups so far this season, only two feature LeVert and Irving. Even without Durant, the pair only overlapped briefly in their last game. Some of that was down to the big lead they had built. Steve Nash may be forced to use the pair together on Thursday against an elite Sixers defense – the additional firepower of LeVert should make Irving’s life easier.

The Nets can use Irving off-ball if LeVert is on the court. This not only gives their offense a different look, it also forces the Sixers to have Seth Curry on one of the Nets’ best offensive players, rather than hiding him on a catch-and-shoot guy.

Although he has only gone over 5.5 once so far this season, LeVert has showed improved feel as a playmaker. He racked up 11 dimes when Irving and Durant sat against the Grizzlies, contributing to a season average markedly higher than any other year in his career.

At odds of +110, LeVert to hit the over on 5.5 assists looks good value. Scoring at the rim is not easy with Joel Embiid looming – LeVert’s drives will result in more kick-outs than lay ups and Brooklyn have the shooting to convert those into assists.

  • Pick: Caris LeVert over 5.5 assists (+110)
