Two teams who have both been playing quality basketball since the All-Star break will meet on Sunday, March 28th when the Atlanta Hawks visit the Denver Nuggets, tip-off 9pm ET.

Atlanta has been a whole different beast since the arrival of new head coach Nate McMillan, going 8-2 in their last 10 games. Denver is also playing well lately and will be very excited to finally get trade deadline acquisition Aaron Gordon on the floor in this contest for his Nuggets debut.

The Hawks and Nuggets already faced off back in February, with Trae Young leading his team to a 123-115 victory.

Atlanta Coming Off Statement Win

The Hawks have gone from an outsider to a team that is in the heart of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. They’re currently 23-22, good for sixth place, much in part to an 8-game unbeaten streak prior to two losses earlier this week to the Clippers and Kings.

But, the Hawks got back to their winning ways on Friday night in loud fashion. Visiting a Golden State team struggling immensely without Steph Curry, Atlanta imposed their will on the Dubs, securing a 124-108 victory.

The story of this night for McMillan’s squad was John Collins, who erupted for a career-high 38 points. The 23-year old also went 4-for-5 from downtown, while collecting 12 rebounds. After being included in trade rumors ahead of Thursday’s deadline, it was the perfect way for the former Wake Forest standout to prove his importance to the Hawks.

Clint Capela absolutely bullied Warriors rookie James Wiseman inside, grabbing 15 boards en route to out-rebounding their opponents 45-33. Atlanta really took it to a team that’s known to be one of the better defensive units in the association, scoring a whopping 60 points in the paint.

It was the perfect response for the Hawks after two forgettable performances in LA and Sacramento. Sunday’s meeting with Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets will certainly be a tough task and look for it to be a fierce battle on the boards between Capela and the Joker.

Another strong shooting night for ATL will be important against a Denver squad that has allowed oppositions to shoot 42% from three-point range in their last three games.

New-Look Nuggets

Michael Malone’s squad was one of the more active organizations at the trade deadline, shipping off Gary Harris and R.J. Hampton to the Orlando Magic while acquiring Gordon and Gary Clark in return, along with JaVale McGee from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gordon should fit seamlessly into Denver’s rotation, giving them another weapon on both sides of the ball who can play alongside Jokic and Jamal Murray. With this pickup, Denver instantly becomes a whole lot scarier. We’ve never really seen Gordon on a contender, so it should be exciting to see what he’s capable of in the Mile High City.

As for McGee, he’s an experienced big who really made a name for himself many years back with Denver. It’s a bit of a coming home party for the former NBA champion and he should definitely make an impact for the organization on the glass.

The Nuggets come into this meeting fresh off a crucial win over Zion Williamson and the Pelicans, where Jokic dropped a team-high 37. Michael Porter Jr. also had a massive night, collecting 25 points. It was a dismal outing for the majority of the game though until Denver came alive in the fourth quarter after trailing by 11.

They went on a 24-8 run to close things out, despite Zion’s career-high 39. The Nuggets also had a hot hand on Friday, shooting 50% from beyond the arc, with MPJ sinking five on his own.

Now, Denver plays seven of their next eight games on home court, where they’ve compiled a 12-9 record this season.

Best Bet

The Hawks are just 11-10 as ATS underdogs this season, but I have a good feeling about this one. They’re coming off a win where the entire rotation was firing on all cylinders offensively. Denver scratched by New Orleans and it’s going to take a bit of time for Gordon and McGee to get used to their new surroundings.

I’m going with Atlanta to carry their momentum into Sunday’s matchup and grab yet another important victory.
