Odds as of Jan 10 at FanDuel

Cunningham Gets His Assists

Cade Cunningham is already a special playmaker. He’s at 10.4 potential assists per game for the season, putting him ahead of Paul George, Mike Conley, De’Aaron Fox, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. That number is up to 11.5 over the last 15 games.

The trouble is, Cunningham’s passing isn’t always rewarded with assists. Detroit is a woeful offensive team, ranking dead-last in offense and 27th in three-point percentage.

Utah is considered an elite defensive team, but Rudy Gobert remains in health and safety protocols. The Jazz have a defensive rating of 113.7 without Gobert, which is worse than all but six teams this season. They have given up 122 to Toronto and 125 to Indiana with Gobert out – admittedly, it was pretty much a full reserve team against the Raptors.

Both of those teams comfortably exceeded their season averages in assists per game.

Cunningham is averaging 7.6 dimes per game across the last 10. He’s gone under this assists line in just one of his last seven appearances.

Providing Gobert is out, the over is really good value here. Even Detroit’s offense can make enough shots to get Cunningham to a healthy assist total.

  • Pick: Cade Cunningham over 5.5 assists (+116)

Jaylen Brown Keeps Contributing

The non-scoring contributions of Boston’s stars have been a hot topic this season. Ime Udoka and Celtics players have called out the score-first mindset of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. They have been selfish at times, with their ball-stopping causing problems for the team in crunch time.

Brown is coming off his most complete performance of the season, and a first career triple-double. He posted 22, 11 and 11 in Saturday’s win over New York. It was a team-first mentality all the way through from Brown, who has been a dominant force on the boards over the last couple of weeks and exhibited some selfless play at the weekend.

He had nine assists in his previous five games. Recording 11 dimes is obviously an anomaly, but Boston and Udoka will hope it was a break through performance. Brown isn’t the most gifted of playmakers, yet he has made progress in that area, and made some good reads against New York. Of course, he benefited from his teammates making plenty of shots.

Brown’s rebounding rate is up at 11.3% over the last seven – he’s rebounding more frequently than Al Horford and considerably more than Tatum.

Indiana is the fourth-worst defense in the NBA over the last 10. If Brown moves the ball like he did on Saturday, there will be plenty of easy assists to be had. He’s averaging 9.1 boards per game over the last seven contests.

It’s short odds, but this is a low number for Brown. He passed this in rebounds and assists against the Knicks.

  • Pick: Jaylen Brown over 8.5 rebounds and assists (-138)
