Odds as of Jan 30 at FanDuel

Garland Picks Apart Detroit

Darius Garland is averaging 10.5 assists per game in January, a mark only bettered by Chris Paul and James Harden. He stepped up in a big way when Collin Sexton suffered his season-ending injury, and he’s done the same with Ricky Rubio sidelined.

Garland makes this Cleveland offense tick, enabling the Cavs to play their three-big lineups. His assist line is set at 9.5 for Sunday afternoon, a number he’s gone over in seven of his last nine games.

The Pistons own the fifth-worst defensive rating in January, and they have been above-average in pace this month. While they have some size and length to throw at Garland, this is a poor defensive team, and Garland has been able to pick such defenses apart with his craftiness out of the pick-and-roll. Prior to posting eight assists in 25 minutes against Milwaukee, he had gone into double-figure dimes in five consecutive games.

Only Luka Doncic has a better assist rate than Garland in January. Detroit gives up the seventh-most assists per game.

Rajon Rondo has not been able to ease Garland’s workload as Cleveland hoped. A blowout win limiting Garland’s minutes is the biggest threat to betting the over here, but with his playmaking of late, there’s still value backing him to reach double figures again.

  • Pick: Darius Garland over 9.5 assists (-118)

Simons Keeps Scoring

In what looked a lost season for Portland, a breakout from Anfernee Simons has provided hope. Simons is 14th in scoring in January, ahead of James Harden, Donovan Mitchell and Anthony Edwards. Sitting at 24.4 points per game, Simons has remained effective even with CJ McCollum’s return.

YouTube video

FanDuel has set Simons’ points line at 18.5 for Sunday night. He’s gone over this number in 10 of his last 13 games.

Portland is facing a Chicago team without its premier perimeter stoppers in Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso. Ayo Dosunmu is a plus defender, but the rookie isn’t going to have all of his focus on Simons with Norm Powell and McCollum both available. The Bulls are the 25th-ranked defense this month, facing a Portland offense which sits 12th in January.

YouTube video

Simons is shooting 44.4% from three since the turn of the year on over 10 attempts per game. He’s coming off a 27-point night against the Rockets, and will once again have license to let fly.

This is a great matchup for the former 24th overall pick. He’s one of the hottest scorers in the league right now, too. Take the over.

  • Pick: Anfernee Simons over 18.5 points (-116)
