The absence of James Harden is the main story ahead of Monday’s NBA games. Milwaukee is 1.5-point underdogs with Harden unavailable. Playing without the former MVP wasn’t too problematic for the Nets in Game 1, as they beat Milwaukee even with Harden leaving the game less than a minute in.

Tipping off a few hours after the Bucks and Nets, the Suns and Nuggets are starting off their series in Phoenix. Injuries are again a focus with Chris Paul’s shoulder still a concern. The Suns saw off the Lakers in six games in the first round and are favored by 4.5 points for the series opener.

Odds as of June 7th

Griffin Gets Shots

The Milwaukee defense was happy to leave Blake Griffin in Game 1. Brook Lopez was dropping into the paint, prioritizing protecting the rim. Griffin got up 13 shots on Saturday, including nine three-point attempts. Many of those were nearly uncontested. Even with James Harden out, the Bucks’ defense was not paying much attention to Griffin, particularly on the perimeter.

There’s good reason for that. Griffin is an average shooter at best, sitting at 34.1% from deep for the season. Despite Milwaukee’s defensive approach, he still outperformed his shot quality in Game 1. ShotQuality.com had Griffin expected to score 14.5 on his shot attempts, but he finished the game with 18.

Brooklyn shot the ball well. Joe Harris and Griffin are going to knockdown plenty of shots when the ball moves as well as it did in Game 1, and it’s inevitable they will get good looks. Griffin going four-for-nine from deep isn’t as outrageous as it may seem with how Milwaukee was defending him.

The Bucks might have lost, but there’s little reason for them to change their approach. Mike Budenholzer will want to force Griffin to beat them. He’s clearly happy to let fly from range, too, making the over on 1.5 threes look like a great bet. With the opportunity for dump-offs and put backs alongside those perimeter shots, the points over represents good value here as well.

  • Pick: Blake Griffin 2+ made threes and over 11.5 points (+133)

Book Takes Over

Chris Paul wasn’t himself throughout the first round. He still played a key role for the Suns, and handled the ball a fair amount, but Paul’s health struggles shined a brighter spotlight on Devin Booker. Long thought of as a potential postseason star, Booker took no time to get up to speed. He was phenomenal against the reigning champions.

Booker ranks eighth in usage rate in these playoffs. That’s ahead of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and LeBron James. While there was debate in the regular season about who was the key man for these Suns, there’s no question it has been Booker in the postseason. Of course, that could change if Paul gets healthy, but for now, Phoenix is all about Booker.

Where he lit the Lakers up with scoring from all over the court, scoring 77 points across the final two games of the series, Booker is likely to face a tougher matchup in Aaron Gordon. Booker has shown growth as a passer as well as his shooting mastery.

The 4.5 assists line seems relatively low. Booker recorded five or more assists in four of six games in the first round – the over looks good here.

  • Pick: Devin Booker over 4.5 assists (-105)
