Two of the most surprising clubs in the NBA meet for the second time this season when the New York Knicks take a trip to the desert to face the Phoenix Suns. Tip-off is scheduled for 10pm ET.

NY lost to the Denver Nuggets last time out, thanks to a 32-point night from Nikola Jokic. Phoenix meanwhile, saw their five-game winning streak end at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks, who blew them out on Wednesday in the tail end of a back-to-back.

The first contest between these two teams this season was just over a week ago, with the Suns beating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Phoenix enters this contest as 6-point favorites.

Knicks on Fire

Pretty much no one could’ve predicted it, but New York is currently in fourth place in a heavily competitive Eastern Conference with a 37-29 record. Better yet, Tom Thibodeau’s team has won eight of their last 10 contests.

However, just two games separate the Knicks and the Celtics/Heat in sixth and seventh. Needless to say, every single outing is extremely important right now for NY as the playoffs quickly approach.

After losing to Denver, the remaining schedule doesn’t get much easier. Meetings with the Suns, Clippers, Lakers, and Celtics lay ahead. The Knicks will be looking to bounce back from a rather forgettable performance in the Mile High City, losing by 16 points.

Julius Randle, who’s been the focal point of their offense all year long, had just 14 points, while no other player in the rotation had over 18. New York was playing catch up for the full 48 minutes, even trailing by 31 points at one point. Ultimately, their lack of presence on the boards came back to haunt them, with the Nuggets out-rebounding them 64-42.

This three-game road trip is going to be a serious test for the Knicks. They don’t play well at all away from MSG, going 15-18 this season. To boot, Phoenix is coming off a brutal loss and will be hungry to get back to their winning ways.

The defense must show up on Friday, while Randle needs a bounce-back performance to get the offense going.

Back Home For Phoenix

As a whole, the Suns are thriving. They’re just a game behind the Utah Jazz for top spot in the West, but returning home is always a positive. Despite their impressive record on the road, Phoenix has been practically unbeatable in Arizona, losing just nine times.

After Friday’s cross-conference matchup with the Knicks, Monty Williams’ squad heads to California to face the Lakers and Warriors. Wednesday’s embarrassing defeat to the Hawks was very unlike the Suns. They were destroyed by 32 points — their largest losing margin of the campaign.

It was the second of a back-to-back though and Phoenix did go into overtime the night before against the Cavs, then had to travel to Atlanta the same night. Nonetheless, it wasn’t the Suns team we’ve been used to seeing.

For most of the game, they were neck-and-neck with the Hawks, but you could clearly see they were burnt out by the fourth quarter, getting outscored 38-15. Booker had a banner night, dropping 30 points, but Chris Paul, who’s been the engine of this offense, was very quiet. The 11-time All-Star had only nine points and six dimes.

Phoenix is usually a very good defensive team that allows the second-least number of assists per game. However, Atlanta was facilitating the rock at a ridiculous level, generating 35 dimes while shooting 50% from downtown.

Prediction

It was crystal clear the Suns honestly just got tired on Wednesday. But, a day to regroup and get back on home court should do wonders. A 25-9 record at Phoenix Suns Arena is a good indication here, while the Knicks struggle to collect victories when they’re not at the Garden.

New York is solid as ATS underdogs (24-17-1), however, I don’t see Phoenix losing again. After being literally embarrassed by the Hawks, expect them to respond with a statement win while covering the spread.

Pick: Phoenix Suns -6 (-110)
