As rumors continue to emerge, it appears that the NBA is approaching a return to action. From what we understand, the games will be played in one city as they aim to sequester the players from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Odds have been posted as to what hotels the players will stay at in both discussed “campus sites” in Orlando or Las Vegas.

Is there any value on the board?

Disney Appears to Be Frontrunner

We have had some mixed reporting over the last couple of days as to when and how the 2019-20 NBA season will resume – but it appears that Orlando is now the frontrunner.

For a long period of time we had heard that Las Vegas would be the place where the NBA gets back to action, but now it looks like Florida is the top choice as Disney World has hosted multiple AAU and NCAA tournaments in the past.

The main difference here is that the state of Nevada isn’t really open for business as of yet. Not only has The Strip been shut down, we still have scant news as to when it will re-open. On the other hand, Florida has re-opened for business and has already hosted UFC fights, WWE events and golf matches since the pandemic hit.

The other big key here is that the Florida’s COVID-19 cases have been managed very well. They’ve continued to ramp up testing significantly, and while their cases rise, their percentage of positive tests has been nominal for weeks now. From May 9th to May 22nd the positive rate on tests was between just one and seven percent.

A number of people are expecting things to get worse in Florida. Although that’s been expected for over a month now and nothing has happened (the situation has improved), that’s probably what keeps Vegas in the picture here. Let’s take a look at what hotels they might stay at if they do, in fact, head to Sin City.

LeBron Holed Up at The Bellagio?

One of the challenges of figuring out where to stay in Las Vegas is figuring out where they’ll play. On one hand, T-Mobile Arena makes sense but on the other hand, that might also be used by the UFC and the Vegas Golden Knights, so that becomes a bit of a traffic jam. They could probably also play at the convention center or UNLV campus.

Truth be told, all of those places are fairly close to each other, so it’s more a matter of where they’ll be comfortable. Given that it’s the NBA, these players are used to high-end luxury and a certain level of service. That probably means that they’re thinking about something like the Bellagio.

I actually think that the Encore or The Wynn is the best bet here because they have a golf course. The players are going to be sequestered for a while and they’re going to want something to do in between the games. A golf course is a nice amenity to have in that scenario.

At this point, we’re mostly throwing darts here as I don’t see any reports other than MGM offering up a block to the players, but MGM is not on the board here. I would bet on Encore with any of the teams as I think that’s one of the higher-end places to stay with good food, a nice casino and the golf course.

What’s the Best Bet in Orlando?

Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry suggested that if the NBA is to continue, it will use two locations with the West playing in Las Vegas and the East playing in Orlando.

That’s contrary to a lot of other reporting but that appears to be why this prop shows East teams paired with Orlando hotels and West teams paired with Las Vegas properties. How this plays out can impact the 2019-20 NBA Championship odds.

For me, the only bet I like here is the Ritz-Carlton Orlando. Players are used to luxury and that’s what they are going to want – especially if they have to be there for months. Sure, the idea of Disney World is appealing but that’s a fun few days; not for weeks on end.

The Ritz-Carlton is a huge property with pools, spas and a golf course. If they want to do a day trip to Disney World, that’s always an option. To me, this is the place that makes the most sense.
