Two red-hot teams square off Monday night in Philly as the Sixers (21-14, 14-5 home) host the Pelicans (23-13, 7-9 away).

Philadelphia enters play winners of eight of their last 10 games, while New Orleans is 4-1 in their last five outings. That includes a win over these same 76ers last Friday, but online sportsbooks aren’t expecting a repeat performance in the NBA odds.

New Orleans Pelicans Betting Analysis

New Orleans rode a franchise record 11 3’s from CJ McCollum last Friday en route to a 127-116 win over Philly. McCollum accounted for 42 points overall, while Zion Williamson added 36.

The Pelicans couldn’t carry that momentum over to Saturday, as they fell on the road in Memphis. McCollum managed only one 3-pointer on seven attempts, while the team went from shooting 54% against the Sixers to 35% versus the Grizzlies.

Defensively, they yielded a shooting percentage north of 50% in both outings, and were absolutely abused in the paint by Memphis. The Grizzlies outscored New Orleans 74-44 down low, in large part due to Jonas Valanciunas’ foul trouble. The Pelicans starting center fouled out after just 22 minutes and six points.

Statistically, New Orleans is one of the best teams in the league ranking third in net rating. They’re number eight in offensive rating and number five in defensive rating, making them one of only two teams (along with Boston) to rate inside the top-nine in both categories.

Entering Sunday, they were half a game out of first in the West, but outside the top-10 contenders in the NBA Championship odds.

On the injury front, Brandon Ingram (toe) remains out, while Larry Nance Jr (neck) will also sit.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Analysis

Philly meanwhile, rebounded from Friday’s loss to knock off OKC on the road on New Year’s eve. Joel Embiid led the way with his fifth career triple-double, as the Sixers never trailed en route to a 115-96 victory.

Tobias Harris scored 23 points, while Shake Milton added 18 points starting in place of James Harden. The 2018 MVP sat due to injury management for his foot, but is expected to be back in the lineup on Monday. The Sixers shot 46% from the floor, a night after shooting 56% versus New Orleans, and abused the Thunder down low.

Philadelphia outscored OKC 66-42 in the paint, while also winning the battle of the boards by six. Defensively, they held the Thunder to 38% from the field, suggesting their poor effort at that end against the Pelicans was an outlier.

The 76ers enter play ranked second in defensive rating behind only Cleveland. They’re especially dominant at that end of the court at home, holding opponents to an average of 106 points per 100 possessions.

For the season they rank just 14th in offensive rating, but over the last 10 games they’re averaging 117.1 points per 100 possessions. Extrapolated over an entire season, that would be higher than every team in the league except the Celtics.

Pelicans vs 76ers Prediction

The way Philadelphia is playing offensively, it’s no surprise to see a total north of 230 for this matchup. However, with two of the league’s top-five defenses squaring off, the value lies with the under.

Yes, these two teams produced 243 points in their first meeting, but it took a sloppy Sixers defensive effort, and a historic shooting performance from McCollum to get there. Now that they’re back home, expect Philly to tighten up in its own end.

NBA Defensive Rating Ranks

Team Rank
Cleveland Cavaliers 1
Philadelphia 76ers 2
Milwaukee Bucks 3
Memphis Grizzlies 4
New Orleans Pelicans 5

Seven of the 76ers last nine games have failed to eclipse 231 points, while the under has hit in nine of the 15 contests where they’ve been favored at home.

Pick: Under 231 (-110)
