The Portland Trail Blazers will roll into Southern California on Wednesday, November 9th to face the red-hot Los Angeles Clippers, who are winners of four straight. Tip-off is scheduled for 10pm ET at The Staples Center.

Portland has also collected two consecutive victories, most recently beating the LeBron James-less Lakers Saturday night. As for the Clips, they took down the Hornets in comeback fashion Sunday behind a solid all-around performance.

These two teams previously met twice last month, with the Blazers rolling to a 111-92 win on October 29th, thanks to a 25-point night from Damian Lillard. However, the Clippers beat them just days prior in LA, 116-86.

Portland Getting Into a Groove

The Blazers haven’t been great early on, going just 5-5. But a two-game winning streak is promising and beating the high-flying Lakers is always a feather in the cap. Although LA was missing LeBron while Anthony Davis left early with a stomach illness, Portland still went to work on one of the championship favorites.

Lillard has been struggling immensely but he finally had a breakout performance on Saturday, dropping a team-high 25. He also shot 43% from downtown, draining 6-of-14 threes. Even more impressive, Dame did all of his damage in the first three quarters before sitting out the final period.

Defensively, the Blazers did a much better job of limiting their opponent. Although LA didn’t have their two best players, not a single starter finished in double-digits in scoring, with Russell Westbrook committing six turnovers. Lillard got some help offensively as Jusuf Nurkic poured in 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Norman Powell added 13.

Playing at home has been the clear strength of this team so far, with all five of their victories coming at the Moda Center. That being said, Chauncey Billups’ squad has yet to win on the road this season. As the Clippers continue to impress, Portland will need another big game from Dame and a bounce-back performance from CJ McCollum, who registered a mere seven points on the weekend.

PG Leading The Way

Paul George has been showing out for the Clippers, averaging 27 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.2 dimes per night. He’s third in the Association in scoring and is a huge reason LA is rolling. PG has dropped 30+ on two occasions and 40+ in two other games as well. Last time out, George collected 20 points in a gritty victory over Charlotte.

LA trailed by 13 in the opening quarter and by nine with only seven minutes remaining in the fourth, but their offense dug deep and went on a 22-0 run to seal the deal. The entire rotation chipped in on this one, with six different players ending up with 14 points or more.

The Clippers shot the ball extremely well, draining 38% of their threes and 20 of their 21 free throws. The only negative was the number of turnovers. Los Angeles committed 20 of them which turned into 30 points for the Hornets. Cut down the mistakes and the Clippers wouldn’t be playing catch-up to this extent.

Following their historic run to the Western Conference Finals without Kawhi Leonard just a number of months ago, it looks like Ty Lue’s squad is back and ready to be a contender again. It took some time for the team to really get going after a 1-4 start, but they’re now firing on all cylinders.

The role players are doing their job around PG and the defense has sharpened up, sitting third in the league at the moment. If Kawhi does come back at some point this season, the Clippers are going to be an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Blazers vs Clippers Prediction

It’s a pretty slim spread here, which makes sense. Both teams are playing well, but Portland has been hopeless on the road. The Blazers are just 0-1 as an ATS underdog this season and were annihilated by 30 points on October 25th in LA against the Clips. While I don’t believe it’s going to be a blowout of that proportion again, Los Angeles will continue their hot streak and comfortably cover the spread on home court.

Pick: Los Angeles Clippers -3 (-110)
