The Alabama Crimson Tide will look to stay atop the SEC basketball standings on Tuesday, Jan. 19 when they head to LSU to face the Tigers for a 9pm ET tip off. The Tigers are one game back, so they could move into first in the conference with a win.

LSU hasn’t lost at home yet, and Alabama hasn’t lost on the road. Something has got to give.

How They’ve Fared Recently

It’s been smooth sailing for Alabama since Dec. 22, when they embarked on a winning streak that is now seven games long. The Crimson Tide have won five of those games by 15 points or more, so the close calls have been limited.

And these aren’t weak opponents, mind you, because Alabama is now entering the heart of conference play. Eight of their wins this year have come against KenPom top-100 teams, including all six of their SEC foes.

Alabama’s most impressive win is definitely a 71-63 win over #6 Tennessee on Jan. 2, in which the Crimson Tide shot 50% form 3-pt. range (10-of-20) and held a lead the entire second half.

LSU has just two losses this year, and both have come by just four points apiece. First, they fell to #25 Saint Louis on Nov. 28. Second, Florida beat the Tigers on Jan. 2. Since that loss to Florida, LSU has rattled off four consecutive SEC wins — all against KenPom top-100 teams.

The Tigers can score in waves, as evidenced by their fifth-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency on KenPom. Facing an Alabama team that has NCAA Division I’s third-quickest average offensive possession (14.2 seconds), we could be in for a track meet.

ATS Analysis

Alabama is 9-4-1 against the spread this season, with a seven-game ATS win streak (which coincides with their straight up win streak).

Five of those wins — including the past two — have come by an ATS margin of 13 points or more. That’s some serious winning. The Crimson Tide are also 3-0 ATS on the road this season.

LSU is 5-7 ATS, but with wins in two of its past three. Both of those wins came with massive ATS margins (by 15-plus points). The Tigers’ three most recent ATS losses have come by six or fewer points. They are 4-4 ATS in home games this season.

Head-to-Head Matchup

Alabama and LSU each earned a straight up win and an ATS win off each other in last year’s pair of matchups. On Jan. 29, 2020, LSU won, 90-76, as five-point favorites. Then on Feb. 15, Alabama returned the favor with an 88-82 win as 2.5-point favorites.

Four of five starters return for both teams, so that doesn’t tell us much about how different they’ll be facing each other this season. What we do know is that Alabama boasts an eye-popping win streak and has not faltered on the road. That’s something worth backing.

Also, given Alabama’s hyper-speed offense and LSU’s strong offensive efficiency numbers, we like the chances for this one to hit the over.

Pick: Alabama +100; Over 162.5 (-112)
