Sun Devils vs Cardinal Betting Trends

Saturday night’s matchup marks the first of two regular-season meetings between these Pac-12 conference rivals. Overall, ASU has picked up the win in eight of 12 clashes with the Cardinal, including a 74-69 victory as 2.5-point underdogs in their last visit to Stanford almost two years ago. However, the Cardinal have been a reliable bet in meetings on home hardwood, going 7-2 SU over their past nine. Stanford has also covered in four of five when facing ASU at home while favored by least five points. Recent clashes between these squads have tended towards high scoring. The total has topped 140 in each of their past nine, and 150 on five occasions over that stretch. Accordingly, the OVER enjoys a steady 9-2 run.

Overall, the Cardinal have been a force on home court, opening their schedule on a 7-0 SU run. That ended with Thursday’s crushing 85-57 loss to No. 3 Arizona. However, Stanford has been a betting disappointment, covering just once in five outings as home chalk. ASU snapped a three-game slide with Monday’s 64-62 home win over Utah. But the Sun Devils have mustered just two wins in seven contests played away from home.

Arizona State Sun Devils Outlook

The Sun Devils took advantage of Utah’s lack of finish in Monday’s victory. The Utes provided ASU with ample opportunity by hitting just 35.1% from the floor and committing 14 turnovers. That marked a reversal of fortune for the Sun Devils, who connected on over 40% of field goal attempts for just the second time in six outings.

Overall, the Sun Devils have averaged just 58.8 points per game over their past five outings. That has done little for the team’s position on the Kenpom ratings, where they are pegged at No. 123 overall, but lag at No. 226 in adjusted offensive efficiency.

One particular bright spot has been the play of DJ Horne. The sophomore guard averaged just 11 points per game during the team’s recent two-game home stand, but has racked up an average of 17.3 points per game over his past three road contests.

Stanford Cardinal Outlook

Winners of six of seven starting in early December, the Cardinal have tumbled back to Earth during a two-game slide in which they have been thoroughly outclassed. Listed as 1-point underdogs in last weekend’s visit to Washington, the Cardinal spotted the Huskies a massive 18-point halftime lead on their way to a 67-64 loss. Stanford subsequently rolled over in Thursday’s lopsided loss to the Wildcats, handing Arizona a massive 18-point lead in the first 16 minutes.

The Cardinal have now failed to take a halftime lead into the room in five straight outings, and have managed to preserve their early-season winning ways on the strength of epic second-half performances. That includes the 15-1 late-game run that sealed a 62-57 win over Washington State on January 13.

There have also been few big offensive performance for Cardinal fans to get excited about. Spencer Jones led all Cardinal shooters with just nine points in Thursday’s loss. Jones has tallied just 12 total points in two games after averaging 19.3 points over his previous four outings.

Sun Devils vs Cardinal Picks

With both these teams struggling to generate offence, the trend towards high scoring when they meet looks set to end. Look for these teams to keep things simple, avoid mistakes, and keep things close throughout the evening.

Pick: Sun Devils +5 (-110); UNDER 132.5 (-102)
