Oddsmakers give more credence to Bama’s home-court advantage than Auburn’s impressive win streak, listing the Tide as 3.5-point home chalk.

Auburn has worked its way into the top-ten favorites in the latest March Madness odds at +1700, a dramatic improvement from where they started the year (+5500). Alabama (+2829) is just outside the top ten.

Auburn Still Perfect in SEC Play

The back half of Auburn’s 11-game win streak has coincided with the start of conference play for the Tigers, and they’ve rolled to a 5-0 start, including dominant road wins over Arkansas (83-51) and Vanderbilt (80-65) plus a trio of double-digit home victories over Texas A&M (66-55), LSU (93-78), and Ole Miss (82-59).

The most-recent win over the Rebels showcased Auburn’s depth. The team managed to hit 82 points without a single player scoring more than 13. Coach Bruce Pearl played 11 different players for at least ten minutes, which is par for the course for this team; ten different Tigers are averagingat least 15.3 minutes per night.

Alongside Arizona, Auburn is one of just two teams in the nation that ranks in the top ten in both offensive efficiency (eighth) and defensive efficiency (seventh) at KenPom.

As he was expected to do, 6’10 junior Johnni Broome leads the team in scoring (15.3 PPG) and rebounding (8.4 RPG).

Alabama Looks to Rebound from Ugly Loss at Tennessee

After sputtering through a 5-2 stretch from late November to mid-December, the Tide looked to have turned a corner when they put together a six-game win streak that included their first two true-road victories of the season. That streak came to an abrupt halt at Tennessee last Saturday, though, the the Tide were run out of the building 91-71, a game they trailed by 13 at the half.

Despite the loss, Bama still rates eighth in overall efficiency at KenPom, largely thanks to the number-two offense, which trails only Zach Edey’s Purdue in terms of efficiency. Senior guard Mark Sears is the catalyst, averaging a team-high 19.8 PPG while dishing out 3.6 APG and hitting at a deadly 47.3% from beyond the arc.

Alabama’s defense has been far more suspect, sitting 66th at KenPom and 60th at Torvik.

Auburn vs Alabama Prediction

This game is likely to come down to how well Alabama shoots from three. Largely thanks to Sears, the Tide sit 13th in the nation in three-point percentage (38.9%). Some experts believe that three-point defense is mostly luck (as it tends to regress to the  mean from year to year) but Auburn has been a top-ten team in three-point defense for two straight seasons.

If a coach was building a team to beat Alabama, the first thing you would look for is lengthy perimeter defenders who can force tough shots from three, and that’s exactly what the Tigers bring to the table. Alabama has been good at home, but not impervious to defeat, already falling to Clemson (85-77). Auburn has an excellent chance to hand the Tide a second home loss on Wednesday night.
