Even though the two schools haven’t met in 33 years, there’s a couple of very familiar faces to Maryland fans with the Eagles. For starters, sixth-year coach Juan Dixon is a Terrapins legend. He was named ACC Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Final Four as he led Maryland to the school’s only March Madness title.

Redshirt senior guard Sam Sessoms is a Penn State transfer. He scored 17 points against Maryland in a 2021 Big Ten game. Sessoms is pacing the Eagles with 22 points and 5.7 assists per game.

Redshirt sophomore guard Nendah Tarke led the nation last season with 2.94 steals per game. He’s averaging 2.3 SPG so far in 2022-23. He’s also second on the Eagles in scoring (12.9 PPG) and leads Coppin State in rebounding. Tarke is pulling down 5.6 boards per game.

In Maryland’s lengthy college basketball legacy, Kevin Willard is the first coach ever to start his career in charge of the team with five straight wins.

Senior forward Donta Scott has 2023 NBA Draft and First Team All-Big Ten potential, and he’s displaying that early in the season. He’s leading the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game. In Maryland’s last two games, Scott scored 24 in a win over Miami and 25 in beating Saint Louis.

Maryland puts one of the nation’s toughest defenses on the floor. The Terrapins are 38th in scoring defense (57.8 PPG), 36th in field goal percentage defense (36.5%), and 8th in 3-point percentage defense (22.1%). Sophomore forward Julian Reese ranks fourth in the nation with a 79.4 field goal percentage (27-of-34).

Maryland likes to play a pressure defense, take away the 3-point shot and force teams to work the shot clock. KenPom is showing the Terrapins with the #8 perimeter defense in the nation. Maryland is forcing the 337th-longest defensive possessions.
