It’s been 37 years since schools from Texas played in consecutive NCAA Tournament championship games, but one of the Baylor Bears or Houston Cougars will ensure that drought is ending.

These Texas schools are meeting Saturday, April 3rd in one of two March Madness Final Four semifinals. It was the Cougars who were the last Texas team to play in successive championship games in 1983-84. However, a Texas school hasn’t finished as NCAA champion since Texas Western in 1966.

Tipoff for Saturday’s game at Lucas Oil Stadium is 5:14pm ET. CBS is carrying the broadcast.

All odds as of Apr. 1st

Prop #1: Grimes Must Roar For Cougars

It’s fair to say that Houston goes as Quentin Grimes goes. When he exceeds his established points total for this game of 15.5, the Cougars are 17-1. Grimes has scored under 15 points in two of Houston’s three losses during the 2020-21 campaign.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound junior guard has netted over 15.5 points in five of the Cougars’ past six games. Grimes has also established a reputation for stepping up in big games. He scored 21 points as Houston beat Memphis in the AAC Tournament final. In Houston’s closest game of the NCAA Tournament, a 63-60 victory over Rutgers in the second round, Grimes scored 22 points.

Grimes is leading the Cougars in scoring this season, averaging 18.0 points per game. He’s also money from 3-point range. Grimes is sixth in the nation in 3-pointers made per game with 3.41. During the NCAA Tournament, Grimes is averaging 43.6% from beyond the arc (7 -for-39).

Baylor has a way of slowing down the opponent’s top scorer, though. Grimes will see plenty of Bears guard Davion Mitchell, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Grimes will need to challenge Mitchell. He can’t settle for threes. Baylor is holding opponents to 26.4% from long range during March Madness.

Grimes is solid from the free-throw line, going 9-for-12 in the tourney. The problem is he just doesn’t get to the line enough.

Pick: Quentin Grimes over 15.5 points (-137)

Prop #2: Mitchell A Helping Hands Person

No player left in the Final Four doles out more apples than Mitchell. The junior guard leads the Bears and is tied for 31st in the nation, averaging 5.3 assists per game.

Twice in the tournament, he’s gone over six assists in a game. That included six in the Elite 8 against Arkansas and eight in the second round facing Wisconsin.

This season, Mitchell has collected at least five assists in 16 games. Twice, he’s gone into double digits in helpers.

Pick: Davion Mitchell over 4.5 assists (-113)
