No. 23 Purdue (17-8, 12-6 Big Ten) has won four games in a row and five of six to jump squarely into the NCAA Tournament field as it prepares to play host to arch-rival Indiana in the Big Ten regular-season finale for both at 2 pm ET on Saturday. The Boilermakers enter as heavy favorites.

Indiana (12-13, 7-11) has fallen precipitously since becoming the first (and only) team to sweep No. 5 Iowa this season, having lost four games in a row and five of six.  In 11 days, the Hoosiers have fallen from a berth in the NCAA Tournament to the NIT.

Purdue has built its success on a highly favorable conference schedule. The Boilermakers played only one game against No. 2 Michigan, No. 4 Illinois, No. 5 Iowa  and and No. 25 Wisconsin.  They are 10-3 since losing to Illinois on Jan. 2.

Indiana guard Armaan Franklin, the Hoosiers’ number two scorer, is expected to miss the game because of a bone bruise.

Boilermakers Dominating Series

Purdue has owned Indiana in the short term. The Boilermakers have won eight in a row and 11 of the last 12 in the series, including an 81-69 victory in Bloomington on January 14. That loss was the Hoosiers’ largest margin of defeat in Big Ten play until recent blowouts by Ohio State and Michigan.

The Boilermakers’ average margin of victory in its eight-game winning streak is nine points, and 11.3 at home. Indiana has not beaten Purdue since a 77-73 home victory on January 20, 2016.

Trevion Williams had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the first game against Indiana this season. Freshman Jaden Ivey had 13 points off the bench and Purdue shot 53.2 percent from the field in that one, and is averaging 14.5 points, 2.3 assists and 2.3 blocked shots in the last four.

Eric Hunter Jr, who missed the first four games of the season with a knee injury had three 3-pointers and the Boilermakers made a season-best 11 of 17 from three-point range.  Indiana shot 43.9 percent and made 3 of 22 threes.

Williams has been Purdue’s biggest threat, averaging 15.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field.

Purdue Doing It at Both Ends

The Boilermakers are one of five NCAA teams to rank in the top 20 in both KenPom’s offensive efficiency margin and defensive efficiency margin.

Purdue, ranks 18th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Boilers have not given up more than 72 points in their last 14 games.

This game matches the two most deliberate teams in the Big Ten, according to KenPom. Purdue ranks slightly ahead of Indiana in adjusted tempo, which measures a team’s possessions per 40 minutes adjusted for its opponent.

Purdue will clinch a double-bye in the Big Ten postseason tournament with a victory or an Ohio State loss. The Buckeyes play host to Illinois on Saturday.

Jackson-Davis Goes It Alone

Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, 6-foot-9, has had a big year after returning to school for his sophomore season, but he has not received a lot of help.

Jackson-Davis is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring at 19.4 points per game, second in rebounding (9.2) and fifth in field goal percentage (51.7) in an offense that likes to get him the ball in the low post.

Armaan Franklin (11.6 points) and senior guard Aljami Durham (11.6 points) have been inconsistent, shooting a combined 39.7 percent from the field in conference play. Durham and Franklin have shot better from distance, making 28 of 68 and 24 of 64 3-pointers, respectively.

The Hoosiers shot 32.7 percent from the field and went 2-for-20 on 3-pointers in their 64-58 loss at Michigan State on Tuesday.

Indiana is ninth in the Big Ten in shooting percentage and 10th in rebounding, and it enters this game at a disadvantage on the boards. Purdue is plus-6.4 in rebound margin per game. Indiana is minus-0.8.

By the Numbers

The teams are trending in opposite directions against the number. Purdue is 6-1-1 ATS since a 17-point loss to Michigan on January 22. The Boilermakers are 4-3-1 ATS at home in the Big Ten.

Indiana has lost four in a row ATS and is 2-8-1 ATS since January 21. The Hoosiers are 0-3-1 ATS on the Big Ten road since that victory.

Purdue is 10-1 at home straight up and 7-1 in the Big Ten, tied with Michigan for fewest home league losses.
