Stampede in Charleston!

It’s so far, so good for freshman Jacob Ognacevic. The 6-foot-7 Sheboygan, Wisconsin native impressed from the perimeter early after draining a silly 51.7% of his 58 triples last year at Valpo.

Head coach Lennie Acuff has another young sharpshooter at his disposal in fellow freshman Tommy Mur. All he did was drop a career-high 22 points — after going 6-of-9 from three-point range– in an 86-77 loss to host College of Charleston Friday night. Another freshman, 6-foot-3 Will Pruitt, had 14 in that loss. It’s those three underclassmen that Acuff will be relying on Sunday against the Greyhounds.

Sophmore wing Jason Montgomery was not far behind Ognacevic, cashing in 47.7% of his 130 3-point attempts during the 2020-21 campaign. Both players will make defenses defend the perimeter.

The Bisons’ best guard is KJ Johnson. The sophomore missed the first six games of last season due to contact tracing. But with him fully healthy to tip off this year’s slate, look for Acuff to utilize him more in a scoring role. With the youthful roster chock full of talent, Johnson will have plenty of options outside of his own burgeoning offensive game.

Accurate Ahsan

When you have a 6-foot-9, 275-pound junior in the Atlantic Sun Conference, you lean on him. You can certainly expect the Bisons to do that Sunday and beyond. But Ahan Asadullah is so much more than a load down low. He’s one of the most important returning offensive pieces to any team in the country.

Just how critical is Asadullah to the Bisons? When hen he’s on the floor, Lipscomb surrenders 103.9 points per 100 (adjusted), but when he sits, that balloons to 117.4, which is Mississippi Valley State-level bad. He smartly avoids foul trouble, but when he rests, the floodgates open. As skilled as Ognacevic is offensively, he won’t be fixing this problem at all.

Obviously, the Bisons need to be less reliant on the junior post. And if they can get the expected contributions from their youngsters, look for Lipscomb to leave TD Arena with a 3-1 record.

That’s My Dog!

If Cam Spencer’s performance Saturday night is a harbinger of things to come for head coach Tavares Hardy’s club, the Greyhounds should be in good shape. The career night — which saw the 6-foot-4 guard convert 12-of-20 shots and score 22 of his 32 points in the second half — was a truly impressive effort.

Unfortunately, it was not enough in a seven-point loss to the Cougars.

If Spencer goes missing in action after such a short turnaround, look for point guard Kenneth Jones to help pick up the slack. He’s a career 39% shooter from deep. He’s also a solid presence at the top of the offense. While it’s unexpected he breaks out for 30 points on a given night, but he won’t make too many mistakes either.

A pair of freshman — Nick Marshall and Chris Kuzemka — should see some run Sunday. Marshall is a big point guard (standing 6-foot-5), while Kuzemka is a quick, athletic combo guard who plays hard and shoots well. Fellow frosh David Brown III is a long wing and solid shooter — and with this team playing four games in six days — look for him to get some minutes as well.

This team made the Patriot League tournament title game after finishing with a 4-10 record in the abbreviated regular season, finishing with their best KenPom ranking (214th) since 2013. If they can stay healthy, the Greyhounds might contend in the 2021-22 season. But I’m fading them in this spot and going with Lipscomb.

Pick: Lipscomb ML (-225)
