Maryland Terrapins Betting Analysis

The Terrapins extended their winning streak on Thursday, knocking off Brown 81-67 at home. Their three-game winning steak also includes victories over Lehigh and Florida, who were ranked 20th at the time.

Leading scorer Eric Ayala led the way versus the Bears, pouring in 22 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Maryland outscored Brown 46-28 over the final 20 minutes, and produced four starters that scored in double figures.

The Terps shot a blistering 49% from the field, but just 23% from downtown. They finished +7 on the glass, and + 1 in the assist department, falling five points short of their season-high mark.

Defensively, they held the Bears to 40% from the field, and 18.2% from beyond the arc, which is a reflection of a pretty good defensive team. Maryland ranks 88th in scoring defense this season, and 73rd in opponent effective field goal percentage. If there’s one area of concern on defense, it’s a lack of turnovers forced. The Terps force an average of only 11.5 turnovers per game, which ranks 286th in the country.

Offensively, Thursday’s game notwithstanding, Maryland is pretty average. They rank 172nd in points per game, 173rd in assists, and 252nd in effective field goal percentage.

Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Analysis

The Hawkeyes meanwhile, rolled to their third consecutive blowout victory on Wednesday, crushing Western Illinois 92-71. It marked the third straight game they’ve scored at least 92 points, and the offense was once again led by Keegan Murray.

The nation’s leading scorer splashed 29 points and grabbed 10 boards, upping his season scoring average to 23.7 points per game. Three other Hawkeyes finished in double figures, including Jordan Bohannon with 13 points.

Iowa shot a scorching 54% from the field, and 40% from three. They outrebounded the Leathernecks 41-31, and finished with 11 more assists. The strong offensive numbers are nothing new for the Hawkeyes as they’re one of the most potent offenses in the country. They rank fourth in adjusted efficiency per KenPom, and only Arizona averages more points per contest.

Iowa has the 12th best average margin of victory this season (+17.8), while ranking second in assist to turnover ratio.

Defensively, they held Western Illinois to 41.7% from the field, but defense is far from their calling card. They yield 70.2 points per game, while ranking 125th in opponent effective field goal percentage.

Maryland vs Iowa Pick

The Hawkeyes offense has more than made up for its lacklustre defense, and they’re set-up for success again on Monday. They’re 8-1 straight up at home this season, and have been cashing ATS tickets at a strong rate. Iowa has covered in three straight, and is 9-4 against the spread overall. They’ve cleared 90 points six times this season, breaking the century mark on three occasions.

The Terps on the other hand, have been a bit of a school yard bully. They’ve taken care of business against the bad teams they’ve faced, but struggled versus the tier one programs. They’re 1-3 both straight up and against the spread versus top-55 times, scoring an average of only 61 points in those games. Maryland is 4-8 ATS overall, and Monday will mark the Terps first true road test of the campaign.

Pick: Iowa Hawkeyes -7.5 (-110)
