The Michigan Wolverines (11-1, 6-1 Big Ten) look to avoid a two-game losing streak following their first loss of the season when they host the Maryland Terrapins (8-6, 2-5 Big Ten) Tuesday, Jan. 19 in Ann Arbor. Tip time is set for 7pm ET inside Crisler Arena.
Juwan Howard’s club was playing like a Final Four team prior to its defeat to the Golden Gophers, having knocked off three straight ranked conference foes by at least 19 points in each outing. Meantime, the Terps scrambled to schedule Division II Wingate following a victory over Illinois, after their scheduled Big Ten tilt with Nebraska Saturday was postponed due to coronavirus issues inside the Cornhusker program.

Sure, Michigan didn’t look great in the 18-point loss to Minnesota. But after going undefeated in their first 11 games, the Wolverines can chalk up Saturday’s loss as a one-off. Plus, it was on the road. The Maize and Blue are 9-0 at home this season — and that’s where Tuesday’s tilt takes place.
Earlier this week, Michigan led Wisconsin by 40 at one point during a blowout victory in Ann Arbor.

As for Maryland, the Terps were able to get some young players experience in the Wingate game after a hard-fought victory on the road against No. 12 Illinois last Sunday.
Now, the Wolverines are favored to get back on track against Mark Turgeon’s squad Tuesday.
Learning From a Loss
The Wolverines, the No. 5 rated team in college basketball by KenPom, were marauding their way through the No. 1 rated conference in historical fashion prior to Saturday’s loss in Minneapolis. In its three previous games, Michigan became the first team ever to win three consecutive games against ranked teams by at least 19 points. So, you’ll have to pardon a hiccup.
Michigan’s 7-foot-1 star big man Hunter Dickinson — who garnered four votes in the conference preseason media poll for freshman of the year — had a season-low nine points and five turnovers in only 23 minutes. Saturday’s performance was a stark contrast to his career-high 28-point night against the Golden Gophers just 10 days prior.
“What I saw was every time he was trying to make plays that were not there,” Howard said after the loss. “This is a good learning tool for him to go back and — which we will — watch film.”
Dickinson is the team’s leading scorer (17.5 points per game) and leading rebounder (7.9 boards per game). I fully expect him to have a bounce-back game against the Terps.
Getting Experience
Having a winnable home game against Nebraska, the lowest-rated (No. 124 on KenPom) program in the conference, wiped away due to Husker COVID issues was frustrating for the Terps — especially a group looking to build momentum off a big win in Champaign.
But perhaps the quick scheduling shuffle of facing the Bulldogs to at least get another game under his team’s belt will pay dividends for Turgeon down the road.
Highly-regarded recruit James Graham III put up 10 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes in the 100-58 blowout.

“What we’re doing to him is almost impossible, for him to to come in after Christmas as a 17 year old kid,” Turgeon said of Graham, who graduated high school early and enrolled in College Park in late December. “I think offensively we all got a little bit more confident with him.”
While Graham may still be a defensive liability, getting him quality minutes was important for a team that has Minnesota on the road and Wisconsin in a revenge game (the Terps beat the Badgers 70-64 Dec. 28) after going to Ann Arbor.
Take Good Care
As long as Michigan doesn’t have a repeat performance of the display it put on on Saturday (20 turnovers vs 22 made field goals), the Wolverines should handle the Terrapins.
KenPom predicts this one will be a 75-66 Michgian win. I’m not sure if it will be that big — Maryland is capable of pulling the upset in this spot — but I have confidence Dickinson is able to refocus and the Maize and Blue are more careful with the rock against the Terps. But not as 10.5-point favorites.
