Oregon senior guard Chris Duarte was The Associated Press Pac-12 player of the year, although the league coaches chose USC freshman center Evan Mobley. Duarte averaged 17.3, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game per game in the regular-season.

The teams split the regular-season series, both winning on the road. Oregon State took a 75-64 victory in Eugene on Jan. 23 before the Ducks won the rematch, 80-67, in the regular-season finale last Sunday. The Ducks clinched the Pac-12 regular-season title with the win.

When It’s Tournament Time, Duck

During coach Dana Altman’s 11 seasons, Oregon has made a habit of peaking at tournament time. The Ducks are 116-47 in games played after Feb. 1 and 60-20 in games after March 1. The Ducks are the defending tourney champ (the event was not played in 2020), have won two of the last four titles. They have played in four of the last five championship games.

Oregon turned to complementary pieces LJ Figueroa and Will Richardson when Arizona State concentrated its defense on Duarte, who had scored in double figures in 19 straight games before getting only six Thursday.

Shooting guard Figueroa had a season-high 21 points and point guard Richardson had 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, getting season highs in rebounds and assists. The Ducks shot 59% from the field and made 10-of-18 3-pointers.

The Ducks are 11-2 since Richardson returned from preseason thumb surgery. Like his team, Richardson is on a roll. He had a season-high 22 points and made 6-of-7 3-pointers in the 80-67 victory over Oregon State.

Oregon has made 45-of-70 three-point attempts in its last four games, 64.3%. Figueroa has made 27 of his last 53.

Oregon State Keeps Rolling

The Beavers, who have won five of their last seven, trailed 32-16 with six minutes to go in the first half before climbing back into the game with the whole ensemble.

Oregon State power forward Warith Alatishe had a season-high 22 points on a 11-of-14 shooting and added 10 rebounds against a pliant UCLA interior defense, Jarod Lucas made 5-of-10 3-pointers and Zach Reichle made three 3-pointers in the final five minutes of regulation as the Beavers overcame a 61-54 deficit.

Forward Rodrigue Andela came off the bench when Roman Silva was in foul trouble and had eight points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes. He also blocked a Jules Bernard shot in the final minute of regulation to keep the Beavers ahead.

The Beavers are 10-7 since a 34-point loss to Arizona on Jan. 14, 13-3-1 ATS in that stretch.

A Look at the Series

The two meetings this season have had distinctly different look.

Oregon shot 57.4% from the field and made 15-of-23 3-pointers in the 80-67 victory last Sunday, Richardson leading the way with six threes. Oregon State shot 51.9 but made only 4-of-17 threes.

Alatishe had 14 points and 16 rebounds in the Beavers’ 75-64 victory Jan. 23, when the Ducks were ranked No. 21 in the AP Top 25 but were playing for the first in 14 days because of a coronavirus stoppage in their program.

Duarte and Figueroa missed that game after testing positive for Covid-19, and Richardson did not return until the next game.

The Ducks have lost only twice since, the first in the following game when Duarte left early because of an ankle injury and Figueroa again did not play.

Both teams are on a roll ATS — the Ducks have covered eight of their last 11 and are 6-2 ATS as a favorite in that span. There will be no secrets, and the Beavers have won four of the last six.

The pick: Oregon State +9 (110)
