Saint Peter’s vs Providence Betting Trends

Saturday afternoon’s matchup marks the first meeting between these teams since November 2019, and just their third clash since December 2007. The Friars romped to a 68-47 win in their most recent meeting, and are now undefeated in three all-time dates with Saint Peter’s. Despite that success, the Friars have let down loyal sports bettors by failing to cover as strong double-digit chalk the last two teams they faced the Peacocks.

While their 2019 matchup proved to be a low scoring affair, these two teams combined to top 160 points in each of their two previous tilts.

After enduring a middling 13-13 campaign last season, the Friars have stormed out of the gate on a 5-1 straight up run. However, they have failed to post consistent results at the sportsbooks, going 3-3 against the spread and covering just once as betting favorites.

The Peacocks have not fared much better. After covering in just five of their final 18 contests last season, they have gone 1-2 straight up and against the spread so far this season. The Peacocks have also lost outright in 23 straight as double-digit underdogs, capped by a 91-70 loss to St. John’s as 13.5-point underdogs two weeks ago.

Saint Peter’s Peacocks Outlook

Losers in two road contests to open their schedule, the Peacocks finally found the win column on Tuesday night, hanging on for a narrow 64-62 win over Long Island University. However, the club hardly made it easy on themselves while squandering an 11-point second-half lead that forced them that made it a one-point contest in the final seconds, and ended with yet another against the spread loss as 9.5-point chalk.

One of the lowest scoring teams in the nation last season, the Peacocks have yet to have an offensive breakthrough this time around. The club has averaged fewer than 63 points per game in the early going. However, after largely containing opposing shooters in their season-opening loss to VCU and this week’s win over LIU, Saint Peter’s maintains a respectable position in the Kenpom ratings, at No. 68 in adjusted defense.

After being used sparingly in their recent loss to St. John’s, Doug Edert led the Peacocks attack for the second time in three outings on Tuesday night, draining a team-high 17 points, and is also leads the squad with 12.7 points per game. Senior big man KC Ndefo is coming off his best defensive performance of the season, racking up nine rebounds to go along with four blocks and three steals.

Providence Friars Outlook

After opening their schedule with five straight wins, the Friars were humbled last time out, dropping a 58-40 decision to the visiting Virginia Cavaliers as 2-point home chalk. The loss marks their lowest scoring performance since suffering a 58-38 road loss to Kentucky in November 2014, and has done little to buoy their position in the college basketball conference odds, where they have faded to a lengthy +3400 bet to win the Big East.

Indeed, the Friars’ effort against Virginia was hard to watch. The club tallied just eight total points over the final 17 minutes of the first half, and just 15 total points before recess after averaging 37 first-half points through their first four outings. And Providence shooters converted just 23.5% of field goal attempts, and went just 3-for-22 from three-point range.

But while leading scorer Nate Watson mustered just eight points on the night, the supporting cast stepped up. Senior big man tallied a season-high 14 points while padding his team-lead with seven rebounds. Another senior, Al Durham, also contributed 10 points, and has now reached double digits in scoring each of his five outings.

The Pick: Saint Peter’s +11.5 (-110)
