The Louisville Cardinals will be aiming to build on an impressive 79-44 season-opening win over Evansville when they return to action on Friday afternoon against the Seton Hall Pirates as 5.5-point favorites in the NCAA basketball odds.

Friday’s clash marks the first game of the new campaign for the Pirates, who will be aiming to take the next step after claiming a share of last season’s Big East regular season title. However, Seton Hall faces an enormous task in their bid to overcome a lengthy dismal track record against the Cardinals, who are also unbeaten SU in 56 straight November home games since 1972.

Cardinals Enjoy Home Cooking in the Louisville Bubble

The Cardinals’ victory highlighted the first day of the Wade Houston Tipoff Classic, a 10-team non-conference tournament taking place in what has become affectionately known as the “Louisville bubble” at KFC Yum! Center. In addition to providing Louisville with a chance to pad its spectacular November home record, it also provides the Cardinals with an opportunity to gel as a group following a number of offseason changes.

Louisville has bid farewell to their top four scorers from last season, but that didn’t slow them down in Wednesday’s victory over the Purple Aces. Four Cardinals players tallied double-digit point totals, with senior guard Carlik Jones leading the way with 18 points, as well as tallying game-high eight rebounds and seven assists. While Jones’ steady debut with the Cardinals after transferring from Radford is certainly welcome, the Cardinals offense is likely to face a tougher task against the Pirates, who surrendered just 67.9 points per game during last season’s march to the top of the Big East conference standings.

Indeed, as the season progresses, the Cardinals are likely to feel the loss of All-American small forward Jordan Nwora, who was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of this year’s NBA Draft after leading Louisville in scoring in his junior year last season. However, if Wednesday’s season opener is any indication, those concerns can wait. In addition to their impressive November home record, the Cardinals have also consistently held the upper hand over Seton Hall in recent years. Louisville is 5-1 SU in its past six meetings with the Pirates, and 11-3 SU in 14 overall clashes since 1952.

Pirates Have Plenty to Prove in Wake of First-Place Finish

After closing out last season just behind Louisville at No. 15 in the national rankings, the Pirates will have a lot to prove when they hit the hardwood for their season opener on Friday afternoon. Like Louisville, the Pirates were denied their chance at a deep national championship run by the unexpected early end to last season. But also like the Cardinals, this squad has work to do to integrate new faces after seeing All-American Myles Powell, and veteran Quincy McKnight and Romaro Gill graduate.

However, those moves also open the door for junior guard Jared Rhoden to take on a bigger leadership role after averaging 9.1 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds last season. Also returning is forward Sandro Mamukelashvili. The towering senior trailed only Powell in scoring last season with 11.9 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebound per game, and was recently named to the Naismith Preseason Watch List.

While the Pirates are looking well prepared to silence naysayers who expect them to take a step back, they will likely need to time to swing into the form that powered them to a 21-9 SU record last season. That is particularly true in light of their recent battle with an outbreak of COVID-19 that forced the squad to pause their preparations for the season, and enter quarantine. And after showing no signs of ending their November dominance on home hardwood in their season opener, Louisville offers the best value in Friday afternoon’s contest.

The Pick: Louisville -6 (-115)
