The Cardinals’ victory highlighted the first day of the Wade Houston Tipoff Classic, a 10-team non-conference tournament taking place in what has become affectionately known as the “Louisville bubble” at KFC Yum! Louisville has bid farewell to their top four scorers from last season, but that didn’t slow them down in Wednesday’s victory over the Purple Aces. Four Cardinals players tallied double-digit point totals, with senior guard Carlik Jones leading the way with 18 points, as well as tallying game-high eight rebounds and seven assists. While Jones’ steady debut with the Cardinals after transferring from Radford is certainly welcome, the Cardinals offense is likely to face a tougher task against the Pirates, who surrendered just 67.9 points per game during last season’s march to the top of the Big East conference standings.

Indeed, as the season progresses, the Cardinals are likely to feel the loss of All-American small forward Jordan Nwora, who was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of this year’s NBA Draft after leading Louisville in scoring in his junior year last season. However, if Wednesday’s season opener is any indication, those concerns can wait. However, those moves also open the door for junior guard Jared Rhoden to take on a bigger leadership role after averaging 9.1 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds last season. Also returning is forward Sandro Mamukelashvili. The towering senior trailed only Powell in scoring last season with 11.9 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebound per game, and was recently named to the Naismith Preseason Watch List.

That is particularly true in light of their recent battle with an outbreak of COVID-19 that forced the squad to pause their preparations for the season, and enter quarantine.
