There’s plenty of history and tradition between the Syracuse Orange and Georgetown Hoyas, even if currently, neither school is looking like their old selves.

Syracuse is 5-4 on the season, while Georgetown is treading water at 4-4.  The Hoyas are coming into this game off an impressive 29-point blowout of UMBC but it’s the visiting Orange who oddsmakers are setting as the 3-point favorites. Georgetown is 3-3 against the spread at home this season.

Syracuse Orange Betting Trends

The Orange come into this contest off a 67-53 setback handed them by the #6 Villanova Wildcats. Syracuse lists five players averaging double figures in points. That quintet is led by head coach Jim Boeheim’s sons, Buddy and Jimmy, registering 17.7 and 14.9 points per game, respectively.

Senior guard Buddy Boeheim ranks seventh in the ACC in scoring. He leads the conference in field goal attempts (140), 3-point attempts (62), and minutes per game (38:13). Junior center Jesse Edwards rates 18th in the nation in eFG% (70.7). He’s averaging 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. However, Edwards is notorious for getting into early foul trouble.

Syracuse is rating among the ACC’s top three in free throw percentage (76.5, first), free throws made (137, third) and fewest fouls per game (14.0, third).

Georgetown Hoyas Betting Trends

A 100-71 verdict over the Retrievers in their last game not only pulled the Hoyas back to .500 on the season, it also was the first time since 2018 that Georgetown scored 100 points in a game.

Graduate student guard/forward Kaiden Rice set a new school single-game record by hitting 10 3-pointers. He scored a career-high 34 points in the game. Rice ranks second in the nation with 4.25 triples per game (4.25) and second in the Big East in 3-point shooting efficiency (45.3%). He’s sixth overall in the NCAA with 34 3-pointers made.

Freshman guard Aminu Mohammed leads the Big East with three double-doubles, including 13 points and 10 boards against UMBC. Freshman center Ryan Mutombo recorded his first career double-double in the win with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Dante Harris dished out a game-high seven assists to go with 13 points.

Hoyas vs Orange Prediction

This one should be a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. Both schools are among the top 65 in the nations in terms of average length of possession. Syracuse is 63rd (16.2) and Georgetown is 51st (16.0). Each team can shoot the three but neither is very effective at defending against the long-range ball.

Syracuse is shooting 36.3% from 3-point range. But the Orange are 207th in the NCAA at defending the 3-pointer (33.4), and 256th in the country in overall field-goal percentage allowed. Georgetown hits threes at a 38.6% rate – second-best in the Big East – but defends them 243rd-best in the NCAA (34.1).

According to KenPom, the Orange rate 23rd in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency (112.1). But they’re a poor rebounding team, especially in terms of offensive boards. Syracuse surrenders offensive rebounds at a rate of 33.6% per game. That could be big for the Hoyas. Georgetown ranks second in the Big East with 42.8 rebounds per contest. That includes 13.6 offensive rebounds per game.

Overall, the Orange are 3-1 straight up against the Hoyas in their past four mettings. However, at home Georgetown has won three of four from the Orange. Still, Syracuse has won games this season against power conference schools. That’s something Georgetown can’t say.
