UC Santa Barbara (12-3, 6-2 Big West) has not lost in the new year — the Gauchos won all eight of their games in January — and will take an eight-game winning streak into the first game of a two-game Big West weekend series against the host Hawaii Rainbow Warriors  (7-5, 5-5).

Only Gonzaga (19 games), Baylor (17), Belmont (17), Morehead State (11) and Loyola Chicago (10) had longer winning streaks than UC Santa Barbara in NCAA Division 1.

UC Santa Barbara is ranked No. 51 in the NCAA net rankings, ahead of Minnesota and North Carolina among others. Only one other Big West team is in the top 100.

UC Santa Barbara’s Offense Among Best In Nation

Coach Joe Pasternak’s Gauchos are ranked in the top 12 in NCAA Division I in four offensive categories — ninth in scoring margin (plus-17.2), 12th in field goal percentage (50.3%), ninth in assists (18.0 per game) and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7:1).

The numbers are somewhat skewed by a 71-point early-season victory over Bethesda University, a member of the Pacific Christian Athletic Association. At the same time, the Gauchos have outscored opponents by an average of 19.4 points during their current eight-game winning streak.

Santa Barbara plays at a slow but efficient pace. The Gauchos rank 299th in adjusted tempo according to KenPom but are 78th in offensive efficiency margin, by far the best in the Big West.

The steady play of senior guards JaQuori McLaughlin and Devearl Ramsey has had a lot to do with it. McLaughlin leads the Gauchos in scoring (16.9 points per game) and has 64 assists against 17 turnovers. Ramsey (7.2 points) has 50 assists and 10 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Ajare Sanni is averaging 12.9 points off the bench, has made a team-high 25 3-pointers and has 32 assists against 16 turnovers.  Six-foot-9 junior Amadou Sow is averaging 11.4 points and leads the Big West with 8.6 rebounds per game.

UC Santa Barbara s will play its first game in 13 days, since an 89-86 overtime victory at UC Davis on Jan. 30. The Gauchos have not lost since Dec. 28, when they fell to UC Irvine.

Hawaii, which  did not start its season until Dec. 11, has had two Big West games postponed.

Rainbow Warriors Peaking At Right Time

Hawaii split with co-league leader Cal Irvine and had two decisive victories over Cal Poly in the first four games of its current homestand, and the 62-61 overtime victory over Cal Irvine on Jan. 30 stands as its signature win.

The Rainbow Warriors overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 2:32 to beat Irvine, which is tied with UC Santa Barbara for first in the Big West. Junior Madut had a career-high 22 points in that game, and team leading scorer Justin Webster (13.8 points per game) had 16.

The Rainbow Warriors scored 165 points and shot 58% and 55% from the field in their two victories over Cal Poly (1-9, 3-13). Graduate transfer Casdon Jardine has made 20 3-pointers and leads the Big West in three-point field goal shooting at 55.6%

By The Numbers

UC Santa Barbara has been a go-to play this season, especially during its current winning streak. The Gauchos are 8-5 ATS overall and were 6-1 ATS in the first seven games of its winning streak until failing to cover as a nine-point favorite in the 89-86 victory at UC Davis. They have been favored by at least nine points in each of their last eight.

UC Santa Barbara has won four of the last five meetings in the series but Hawaii has won four of the last five at home. The Gauchos are 4-4 ATS as a road favorite in the league this season. The Rainbow Warriors are 6-3 ATS (two games were off the board) are 3-2 at home ATS, covering the last three.
