Oklahoma State will face their third-straight top-25 team when they host West Virginia on Monday night. The Cowboys are fresh off of an overtime upset of No. 13 Texas Tech as an 8.5-point underdog on Saturday night. West Virginia was turned away by Oklahoma 75-71 the last time they hit the hardwood.

The Mountaineers won and covered both matchups last season including a 65-47 pounding in the last meeting on February 18. The current odds show West Virginia as an 1.5-point favorite in this matchup.

West Virginia Is Looking To Get Back On Track

Before Saturday, West Virginias’ only two losses came at the hands of teams ranked in the top three. They play a suffocating brand of defense that is currently 13th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency.

That’s why their loss to unranked Oklahoma in their last game was so surprising. Even though Oklahoma has a very good offense, they are the type of team West Virginia usually handles.

Oklahoma jumped out to a 38-20 lead in the first half and West Virginia simply couldn’t come back. The 20 point half was the lowest scoring half of the season for West Virginia.

They came out strong in the second half winning the period 51-37 but simply ran out of time. They will no doubt emphasize defending the three-point line moving forward as they allowed Oklahoma guard Umoja Gibson to hit eight treys on the night.

Oklahoma State Is No Pushover

The Cowboys are coming into this game with a ton of confidence. Even though they have lost two of their last three games, both loses were at the hands of two very good teams (Texas & TCU) and neither was by more than three points. In their last game, they finally got over the hump and shocked number 13 Texas Tech on the road 82-78. It took an extra five minutes but in the end they got the job done.

Oklahoma State has been very good at scoring the basketball in the opening half ranking in the top 100 at 35.2 points per first half. The game against Texas Tech was no different as they took a 37-28 advantage into the locker rooms at the end of the first.

They fought off a Red Raider comeback in the second half and secured the victory in overtime. Four different Cowboys hit double figures in the points department lead by Avery Anderson and Isaac Likekele who both scored 17.

The West Virginia defense has been great all season but they have yet to show that they can stop an elite offense. Oklahoma State may not be elite offensively but they have put up at least 74 points in their last three games against some very good competition.

Defensively they are 27th in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency which could give West Virginia problems.

The Mountaineers have not proven that they can score against elite defenses. The last one they saw was Kansas and they failed to reach 70 points in that game. If West Virginia gets caught sleep walking again, Oklahoma State will be hard to stop from pulling their second straight upset.
