Rebuilt Hall Starts Fast

Seton Hall 6-foot-10 junior Tyrese Samuel stepped up in the retooled Pirates’ 93-49 rout of Fairleigh Dickinson in the season opener Wednesday.

Samuel had 19 points and 11 rebounds — his first double-double in 57 career games — while coming off the bench as 6-foot-8 South Florida transfer Alexis Yetna started alongside holdover 7-foot-2 center Ike Obiagu in the frontcourt. Samuel played 27 minutes against FDU, most among the big men.

Veteran wing Myles Cale had 14 points and three 3-pointers and guard Jamir Harris had 13 points and four threes in the opener, which senior wing Jared Rhoden missed because of a right ankle injury suffered in practice in the first week of November.

Rhoden, who averaged 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in a breakout 2020-21, wore a walking boot on the bench at the FDU game and his status for the Yale game is unknown. Rhoden is expected to be the focal point of the offense this season.

Yale on a Roll

Yale appears glad to be back on the floor after a forced 20-month break. The Bulldogs shot 53.7% from the field, made 17 3-pointers, and had 28 assists on 48 field goals in their easy victories over NCAA Division III Vassar and UMass. They also had 17 steals and forced 37 turnovers.

Senior guards Azar Swain, a preseason all-Ivy pick, and Matthue Cotton have scored 33 points apiece and are a combined 9-for-21 from 3-point range. Cotton was 6-of-13 from distance and has made as many 3-pointers as he has 2-pointers.

Point guard Swain, has six assists and one turnover in 51 minutes. He averaged 16.0 points a game and led the Bulldogs with 93 3-pointers in 2018-19.

Guarded Optimism

The Pirates used the transfer portal to stock up at guard by adding transfers Harris and Kadary Richmond, and they are hopeful the injuries guard Bryce Aiken suffered last season are a thing of the past.

Harris and Richmond started against Fairleigh Dickinson, and Aiken tied Cale with a team-high 15 points. Harris, a 6-foot-2 graduate transfer, is a scoring threat at the point position after making 104 three-pointers and shooting 41.3% from distance in two seasons at American after playing his first year at Minnesota.

Aiken averaged 16.8 points per game in four seasons at Harvard before transferring to the Hall last season. He was limited by ankle and knee injuries a year ago and opted to return for a sixth NCAA season. Aiken and Kyrie Irving went to the same high school, and Irving attended the FDU game.

A Preseason Tester

Seton Hall joins Ohio State, Florida and California in a strong field in the Beach Division of the Fort Myers Tip-Off, which moves to Florida for the final two rounds on Nov. 22 and 24. The Pirates are scheduled to play Ohio State.

Yale is to play Southern Utah in the Palm Division

By the Numbers

Yale is 0-9 straight up in their last nine games against a Big East opponent. Seton Hall played under the total in the season’s opener against Fairleigh Dickinson and was under the total in its final five games of 2020-21.

A step up in class does not bode well for Yale, despite the face the Pirates may be without Rhoden.

The pick: Seton Hall -12.5 (-110)
