Rivalry Bucked?

The 5-0 Buckeyes open as 27.5-point home favorites over the 2-4 Wolverines in the Horseshoe for the latest installment of the most storied rivalry in college football.

But will the game be played? The Wolverines have paused in-person football activities until at least Monday due to coronavirus issues. If the game is a no contest, Ohio State – which has already canceled two games this season – would fall short of the conference-mandated minimum number of games played to be eligible for the Big Ten championship game –unless conference leaders change the rule.

OSU blew out Michigan State 52-12 in Week 14 with quarterback Justin Field doing it all. The Heisman Trophy contender threw for 199 yards on 17-of-24 passing and rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries, scoring four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). Meanwhile, Michigan had its Week 14 game against Maryland canceled due to the coronavirus, putting its final game of the 2020 season against OSU in doubt.

Even if the game isn’t played, there’s still a chance the Big Ten amends its earlier mandate of requiring teams play a minimum of six games to be eligible for the conference title game — which would theoretically keep the Buckeyes in the CFP mix.

But if it is played, look for Ryan Day’s team to make a statement against a beleaguered UM squad possibly playing its last game under Jim Harbaugh. This line could easily grow during the week.

Miami Nice

Miami may be out of the mix for the ACC championship game by virtue of Clemson’s 45-10 win over Virginia Tech in Week 14, but the No. 10 Hurricanes still have a nice matchup against No. 17 North Carolina to further impress the CFP committee.

King and the Hurricanes humbled the Blue Devils and shut out a David Cutcliffe-coached team for the first time since Miami turned the trick on Duke back in 2008.

As for the Heels, they took care of the catamounts as expected. But with the Hurricanes still very much playing for a possible New Year’s Six Bowl at home, this spread could increase before kickoff.

Crosstown Showdown

It’s taken a minute, but perhaps UCLA is finally getting things going in Year 3 of the Chip Kelly Era in Westwood.

The Bruins’ 25-18 win over Sparky pushed their mark to 3-2 thru five games in this pandemic-shortened season, which is the deepest point in a season the program has been over .500 under the highly-touted college coach.

USC still enters the Rose Bowl as a touchdown favorite and has won this game four of the last five outings. With both teams on a roll, this line should stay where it’s at.
