  • In the Georgia vs TCU betting trends for the National Championship game, the public is embracing the underdog Horned Frogs
  • TCU, a 12.5-point underdog, is getting the majority of bets and handle in both spread and moneyline splits
  • There’s a difference of opinion on the total, however

Oddsmakers very much like the #1 Georgia Bulldogs (14-0, 7-7 ATS)  to rule over the #3 TCU Horned Frogs (13-1, 10-3-1 ATS) in the CFP National Championship game on Monday. The people, though, are going crazy for the Frogs.

Top-ranked Georgia is set as a 12.5-point favorite to retain the national title the Bulldogs won last year. However, in the public betting trends, the people are leaning toward TCU. The Horned Frogs are getting the people’s love in moneyline and point-spread splits in terms of both handle and bets.

When it comes to the total of 63 points, there’s a difference of opinion. In total wagering handle, public betting splits are going 52% with the under. On the other hand, there’s 77% of bets supporting the over. The total for this game has crept up a tick from the 62.5 points that were first given when the CFP opening odds originally dropped.

ATS Splits Like TCU

Interestingly enough, when Georgia won the CFP final and the national championship last year, the Bulldogs were the #3 seed, while the Alabama Crimson Tide came into the game as the #1 seed and the defending national champions. Georgia, though, was also favored in that game. The Bulldogs were the 3-point chalk.

Georgia is carrying a much larger favorite’s tag in this game. So far this season, such a wide advantage in the betting line hasn’t done the Bulldogs any favors. As a double-digit point favorite this season, Georgia is 6-6 ATS. Overall, the Bulldogs are 1-3 ATS in their last four games. That includes the CFP semifinal. Georgia won 42-41 over Ohio State as a 4.5-point favorite.

TCU is 6-2 ATS over the past eight games. The Horned Frogs are 3-1 SU and ATS as a betting underdog, including their 51-45 CFP semifinal win over Michigan as 8-point underdogs.

This will be the fifth-ever meeting between the two schools. Georgia is 4-0 both SU and ATS in those games. In their previous clash, the Bulldogs beat the Horned Frogs 31-23 as the 3-point chalk in the 2016 Liberty Bowl.

Public Split On Total

When it comes to the total, the public’s indecision is entirely understandable. It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Bulldogs. Georgia has gone over in the past four games, four of the last five, five of the past seven and six of the last nine. However, prior to that, the total had gone under in seven consecutive Bulldogs games dating back to last year’s CFP.

It’s also been a case of following the bouncing ball where the Horned Frogs and the over/under are concerned. Two of TCU’s last three games have gone over. At the same time, only two of the Horned Frogs last five games went over. Prior to that, six of seven TCU games went over.

In that 2016 Liberty Bowl game, Georgia and TCU went over the total of 48 points.

Georgia Not On Mind Of Moneyline Bettors

Straight up, the Bulldogs are a dominant force. They are 16-0 in their last 16 games and 32-1 SU going all the way back into the 2020 season.

For TCU, this is their first season with double-digit victories since 2017 (11-3). The only loss for the Horned Frogs this season was to Kansas in the Big 12 championship game. Last year, when Georgia won the national championship, the only loss the Bulldogs suffered all season was to Alabama in the SEC title game.
