Life comes at you fast. Nobody knows that better than Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders.

The Tigers started the season 3-0 and were on top of the world. Back to back losses have changed the outlook dramatically ahead of this weekend’s tilt with Alabama A&M.

Suddenly, Jackson State are underdogs staring a .500 record square in the face.

Can Sanders get the Tigers back on track? Let’s look into a major decision he made mid-week and also break down an opponent that’s itching to get back on the field.

Meet the New QB1 for Jackson State

Quincy Casey is in, Jalon Jones is out. That was the key change Sanders decided to make heading into his teams sixth game of the season. Jones had a respectable 11:3 touchdown to interception ratio, but those three interceptions came in the Tigers back-to-back losses.

Casey hasn’t seen much of the field this season, but he’s shown flashes of capability. He has completed 13 of 21 pass attempts and has one touchdown. Quite frankly, this feels like a bit of a panic move from Sanders. It seems like an overreaction to both spark his team and quiet the critics.

Sanders was so embarrassed by the Tigers 34-14 loss to Southern that he apologized to Jackson State, the alumni and football legends such as Lem Barney, Robert Brazile and Jimmy Smith. He was adamant this isn’t what fans should expect to see from his program but as we have come to learn, talk is cheap.

The brazen press conferences don’t change the fact that the JSU program is reeling right now and enters one of their toughest tests to date with a brand new QB under center.

Alabama A&M Ready to Play After Long Layoff

The Bulldogs are ready to play their second game of the season after more than a month on the sidelines. They haven’t played since March 6th due to COVID-19 related scheduling issues. Head coach Connell Maynor has the tough task of ramping his team up from practice to a game on ESPN that is likely their biggest showcase of the season.

The good news? The one game his team did play was a 31-7 drubbing of South Carolina State. There’s a reason they are favored to win this game and it isn’t simply because of an opponent on a cold streak.

Alabama A&M’s best player is quarterback Aqeel Glass. He was named the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year and stuffed the stat sheet in the Bulldog’s opener. There were flashes of both good and bad. If you’re a glass half full type of person you’ll marvel at his 272 passing yards and four touchdowns. If you’re a glass half empty football fan, the three interceptions and 45.5% completion percentage will be of concern.

The reality is, he’s a stable force and should be ready to perform under the bright lights. The fact the Bulldogs have a known quantity listed at QB1 gives them a decisive advantage heading into this game.

Fade Sanders & Jackson State

Remember when Sanders was going viral in videos telling his players to take penalties for dancing and celebrating after scores? Well, those days feel like forever ago.

Sanders appears to be overreacting to the point of changing quarterbacks and apologizing to alumni. It’s tough to believe he won’t coach this game with the same scattered approach. Trust Glass and the rested Bulldogs to take advantage of the match up and not only win, but cover the number.

  • The Pick: Alabama A&M -3.5 (-110)
