Florida State narrowly defeated LSU 24-23 in the previous season’s Week 1 matchup and are the underdogs to win the 2023 rematch. The Seminoles lead the all-time series 8-2, but the last time the two teams played prior to last year was 1991.

LSU vs FSU Trends & Splits

According to the college football public betting trends, bettors are expecting the Tigers to exact revenge on the Seminoles. LSU is getting 80% of the spread handle as 2.5-point favorites, although FSU is getting 38% of the moneyline handle as +110 underdogs.

Both teams have a knack for September showdowns. LSU is 6-1 SU in their last 7 games played in September, while Florida State has a 14-6 SU record in their last 20 games played in Week 1. The Tigers are also 11-2 in their last 13 games against the ACC conference.

The Seminoles were one of the better CFB teams against the spread last season, currently sporting an 11-5 ATS mark in their past 16 contests. LSU wasn’t quite as impressive ATS in 2022, posting an 8-6 mark against the spread last season.

Tigers Are Loaded in Year Two Under Kelly

LSU begins the 2023 college football campaign following a 10-4 season in their first year under ex-Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly. The Tigers have been rising in the National Championship odds as they return plenty of talent from the team that made the SEC Championship Game in 2022.

The offense revolves around dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw for over 2,900 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three picks last season. Not to mention, the fifth-year starter also added 885 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.

LSU loses elite wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, but they still have Malik Nabers, who led the Tigers with 72 catches for 1,017 yards and three scores last season. Sophomore TE Mason Taylor is also poised for a breakout campaign, while Notre Dame transfer RB Logan Diggs (822 yds) boosts the ground game.

Defensively, the Tigers might have the best linebacker in the SEC in Harold Perkins, who recorded 73 tackles with 8.5 sacks, 14 quarterback hurries, and 14 tackles for loss in 2022. Maason Smith, a surefire future NFL star, is the heart of this defense, however, registering 63 tackles and nine sacks last season.

Seminoles Ready to Take the Next Step in ACC

Mike Norvell’s Florida State is ready to challenge Clemson for the ACC title after posting an 11-3 record in 2022 in Norvell’s third year at the helm. The Seminoles are loaded with talent and are co-favorites to win the ACC Championship.

Much like LSU with Jayden Daniels, the Seminoles’ offense revolves around their starting quarterback. Jordan Travis returns under center for the Seminoles after throwing for 3,214 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, while rushing for an additional 417 yards and seven scores on the ground.

The Seminoles do lose one of their better running backs in Treshaun Ward to Kansas State, but they at least return Trey Benson, who rushed for 990 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022. The Seminoles are loaded at wide receiver, with (6-7, 240-pound WR Johnny Wilson (897 yds) leading the charge.

Defensively, the Seminoles return plenty of talent from their elite defense that allowed an ACC-best 307.3 yards per game last season. Tatum Bethune and Kalen DeLoach are a lethal tandem at linebacker, while Virginia transfer Fentrell Cypress II boosts a solid defensive backfield.

LSU vs FSU Prediction

LSU vs Florida State has all the makings of a tightly contested, hard-fought battle, making predictions no easy task. We do agree with the oddsmakers that the Tigers have a slight edge here, especially with their dynamic run game.

LSU vs FSU Offensive Stats

Stat Category LSU Florida State
Total Points 34.50 36.08
Passing Yards 262.79 264.38
Rushing Yards 183.79 214.08
Time on Field 30:53 30:59
Number of Plays 71.36 69.54
Yards Per Play 6.35 6.96

Despite recent news that LSU running back John Emery will not play in the season opener, we still like the Tigers’ run game to be a difference-maker on Sunday. Jayden Daniels ran effectively against FSU last season, and the Tigers’ O-line has improved since last year. Florida State’s run defense was ranked 75th in the country in 2022.

We’re a believer in Florida State ascending to the ACC Title throne this season, but it’s hard to ignore the betting trends for their opener. The Seminoles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 AP top-10 matchups and 1-4 ATS in their last five season openers.

LSU is loaded with future NFL talent and features a head coach who is coming off six straight double-digit win seasons. This line has ticked up a point in LSU’s direction since opening months ago, and we’re buying in on the LSU hype in 2023.

  • LSU vs FSU pick: LSU -2.5 (-110)
