Cardinals Can Sling It

Ball State is listed as as 19.5-point road favorites over Akron  with kickoff is set for 7:00 pm EST at InfoCision Stadium. Ball State is 4-4 (2-2 MAC) after winning the conference last year, while Akron is in jeopardy of missing a bowl for the fourth straight season with a 2-6 (1-3 MAC) record.

The Cardinals have the chance to create some separation in the West Division with a win over the Zips. Northern Illinois leads the division with a 6-2 record, but there are four teams sporting 2-2 conference records. Ball State will be eager to snap a two-game losing streak to Akron after winning the prior five meetings.

Ball State’s dynamic offense is going to be a problem for this struggling Akron defense. The Cardinals have a veteran quarterback in Drew Plitt, who has two All-MAC wide receivers to throw to in Justin Hall and Yo’Heinz Tyler. They should have no trouble picking apart a Zips’ defense that is allowing 38.9 points per game.

While Ball State should have a big day through the air, it’s hard to see Akron generating much offense. They rank last in the MAC in scoring offense (19.9 PPG) and have allowed 46 sacks though eight games. Ball State has a solid pass rush that should be able to penetrate Akron’s susceptible offensive line to pressure the QB.

Ball State possesses its QB and top three receivers who led the team to a MAC Title in 2020. The Zips, meanwhile, have cycled through three different QB’s and have yet to find a rhythm offensively. Akron does have home-field advantage, but they’re 1-3 at InfoCision Stadium. Look for a big day from Plitt to help the Cardinals win by at least three TDs.

  • Pick: Ball State -19.5 (-110)

EMU vs Toledo Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Eastern Michigan Eagles +9 (-110) +270 O 52.5 (-115)
Toledo Rockets -9  (-110) -350 U 52.5 (-105)

Rockets & Eagles Will Light Up Scoreboard

Eastern Michigan and Toledo are both sitting at 2-2 in the MAC West entering  a pivotal Tuesday night showdown from the Glass Bowl. Both teams are in need of victories to become bowl eligible and challenge Northern Illinois for the division title. The Rockets have had the Eagle’s number recently, winning nine of the last 10 meetings.

Eastern Michigan had been one of the worst MAC teams for a long period of time, but coach Chris Creighton has helped turn the program around. They’re coming off a 55-24 win against Bowling Green and only lost by seven points to the conference-leading Huskies. Toledo, meanwhile, is coming off a 34-15 win over Western Michigan.

Toledo only lost by three points to Notre Dame this season and have the ground game to give Eastern Michigan trouble. The Rockets are led by RB Bryant Koback, who has rushed for 635 yards and five scores. He’s torched Eastern Michigan for over 400 yards in back-to-back years and should have his way again vs a weak EMU rush defense.

The Eagles have a top-50 offense thanks in part to Cincinnati transfer Ben Bryant taking over for Peyton Hutchinson as starting QB. The senior has thrown for 1,836 yards and 10 TDs with only four interceptions. He’ll face his toughest test yet against a Toledo team that leads the MAC in pass efficiency defense.

The Rockets have owned this rivalry, but three of the last four meetings have been decided by one score. The 2020 matchup was an offensive display in which the two teams combined for over 70 points. With both teams boosting dangerous offensive weapons, bet on another high-scoring affair Tuesday.

  • Pick: Over 52.5 (-115)

Miami OH vs Ohio Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Miami OH RedHawks -9 (-110) -270 O 52.5 (-115)
Ohio Bobcats +9  (-110) +350 U 52.5 (-105)

Bobcats Aim to Spoil RedHawks Night

It’s the 97th edition of the “Battle of the Bricks when Miami (Ohio) and Ohio faceoff at Peden Stadium on Tuesday night. Both teams are coming off bye weeks, but heading in opposite directions. The Bobcats (1-7) have lost three straight games, while the RedHawks (4-4) are tied with Kent State for first-place in MAC East the after two consecutive wins.

Although the Bobcats enter this rivalry game on a losing streak, there’s reason to think they can cover the spread against Miami. The Bobcats have won 11 of the past 14 meetings with the RedHawks and are coming off a strong showing against the Golden Flashes. Tim Albin’s team generated 457 yards of offense in a 34-27 loss.

The big positive for Ohio from their last game was the play of QB Armani Rogers.  The senior reeled off a 99-yard TD scramble run that set the record for the longest rushing score by a QB in NCAA history. The Bobcats also have two solid running backs in De’Montre Tuggle and O’Shaan Allison, who should be able to make plays against a RedHawks rush defense allowing 139 yards per game.

The Bobcats haven’t lost by more than a TD to any conference opponent this season, while Miami has yet to blowout a MAC opponent. The RedHawks are finding ways to win games, but they’re only averaging 23.8 points per game and 149 rushing yards per contest.

The Bobcats showcased their offensive potential last time out and should be able to keep it close against a RedHawks team struggling to put up points. The last two meetings have come down to one possession, and we should see another close game Tuesday.

  • Pick: Ohio +9 (-110)
