The 11th-ranked Oregon Ducks head to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 PM EST.

The Ducks are 10.5-point favorites heading into kickoff at Martin Stadium in both teams’ second game of the season.

Oregon is coming off a 35-14 victory over Stanford that saw the Ducks roll up nearly 500 yards of offense under new quarterback Tyler Shough, an entirely new offensive line, and first-year offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.

Meantime, Washington State beat Pacific Northwest rival Oregon State for the seventh straight time in a 38-28 win thanks in large part to Deon McIntosh. The running back churned out 147 yards on just 18 carries and a touchdown while filling in quite nicely for the Cougs’ best player in Max Borghi.

Justin Who?

Shough started out slow but eventually got things going against the Cardinal last week. The redshirt sophomore from the Phoenix area finished with decent numbers, going 17-of-26 passing for 227 yards and a touchdown pass while running  11 times for 85 yards and another touchdown.

Of course, Shough is succeeding Justin Herbert, who carried UO to a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin Jan. 1 and is now putting up great numbers for the Chargers in the NFL (albeit, mostly in defeat — he’s only 1-6 as a starter thanks to LA blowing lead after lead).

Two factors that made Shough’s anticipated debut so impressive were that it was done behind a completely rebuilt offensive line — while doing it all under a new offensive coordinator. The o-line replaced each of the top six players in last season’s rotation — including projected top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Penei Sewell, who opted out of this season.

Shough didn’t miss a beat in Moorhead’s offense. The highly-sought after former Mississippi State head coach is now running the show in Eugene.

If Shough and his teammates can execute the run-pass option like they did against Stanford, Wazzou will have its hands full.

New Faces, Same Result

The Cougs handled the Beavs in Corvallis in Week 10 despite a true freshman quarterback getting the start. Not to mention, they also had their head coach making his debut against an Oregon State program that just missed a bowl berth in 2019.

Jayden de Laura was solid at quarterback, putting up nearly identical numbers to what Shough did. De Laura finished with 227 passing yards on 18-of-33 attempts. He tossed a pair of touchdowns and one pick. He also did some damage on the ground, rushing for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Wazzou knocked off OSU for a seventh straight — but how will the program fare against a superior Oregon unit? The Cougs might have Borghi back, which would give them a big boost. The junior from Colorado missed the season opener due to a back injury. Having a two-headed rushing attack could play to the home team’s favor Saturday.

Weather a Factor

The Saturday forecast in Pullman is ugly. The Palouse was hit with snow Tuesday, and it looks like it’s going to be wet and possibly windy Saturday evening. If Borghi can go — and McIntosh can do anything close to what he did against Oregon State — the Ducks will be in for a battle. These two teams have played some memorable games recently, including last year’s contest that saw UO grind out a 37-35 win.

Prior to last year’s thriller, Washington State had won four in a row over Oregon — its longest win streak in a series that dates back to 1901.

While Oregon is the worthy favorite in this spot, I’m not sure the Ducks are 10.5-point favorites. With all the new faces on both sides — and the weather potentially quelling any offensive fireworks — I like home dogs in this spot.

The pick: Washington State +10.5 (-118)
