Ducks Flying Low

Oregon will be looking to get back on track against Washington after suffering consecutive upset losses at the hands of Oregon State and California. The Ducks had no answer for the Beavers run game in Week 13 and then shot themselves in the foot with a season-high nine penalties the next week against the Golden Bears.

Despite the back-to-back losses, there’s still good reason the Ducks are favored by almost a TD in this game. Oregon leads the Pac-12 in yards per game (467) and are coming off a strong defensive effort in which they held California to just 88 yards on the ground.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Shough had the worst game of his career against Cal, but you have to expect some growing pains with a young QB. He’s been one of the best QBs in the conference and possesses great dual-threat ability. One storyline to monitor is the health of breakout receiver Devon Williams, who didn’t make the trip to Cal but could return vs Washington.

He leads the team with 264 receiving yards and is Shough’s favorite deep ball target.

Huskies Also Out for Redemption

Washington will be looking to play a complete football game for the first time in weeks after starting very slow in back-to-back games against Utah and Stanford. The Huskies were able to rally from a 21-0 halftime deficit to beat the Utes in Week 13, but they weren’t so lucky the following week against Stanford.

The Huskies were down 28-3 at halftime to the Cardinal last weekend and couldn’t complete the comeback in an eventual 31-26 defeat. Despite the slow start, the Huskies flexed their offensive muscles in the second half with QB Dylan Morris finishing with 254 passing yards and RB Sean McGrew punching in a pair of scores.

Washington leads the Pac-12 with only 346.3 yards allowed per game and boast one of the country’s top pass rushers in Zion Tupuola-Fetui. Their defense should rebound against Oregon, and the offense could get a boost with starting wide receivers Puka Nacua and Terrell Bynum set to potentially return after missing the Stanford game.

What’s the Best Bet?

Oregon has won 14 of its last 16 meetings with Washington, but the last two contests have been incredibly tight. The Huskies have kept it within one possession in back-to-back years and have showed great fight in consecutive weeks.

Both teams have plenty to play for and should be much better in Week 15. Oregon needs to clean up the turnovers that have hurt them all season, while the Huskies need to play a full game and not just turn it on when they feel like it.

Oregon’s dominant ground game led by Travis Dye and CJ Verdell should lead them to victory in this one, but the Huskies are capable of keeping it close. They have one of the nation’s best tight ends in Cade Otton, who has yet to be used to his full potential and could go off against an Oregon secondary allowing 277 yards per game through the air.

Oregon has the better talent, but the team’s defense hasn’t shown much to indicate they can prevent a decent offense from putting up points and sticking around. Bet on Washington playing a complete game against their top rival and keeping the game close.

Pick: Washington Huskies +6 (-110)
