Thursday night brings not only NFL action to sweat, but college football as well. The spotlight shines on the AAC where a pair of underwhelming schools are set to do battle.

Memphis (4-5, 2-4 AAC) plays host to Tulsa (3-6, 1-4 AAC), looking for their first win since October 1st. The Golden Hurricane meanwhile, has won just once since mid-September and is fresh off back-to-back defeats.

In the Tigers’ defense, three of their last four losses have been one-score outcomes. Perhaps that’s why they’re getting so much love from bettors early in the week, and from oddsmakers in the college football odds.

Total wise, the number opened at 61.5, but don’t expect that number to last long. 48% of the early over/under tickets are on the over, which is making up 94% of all money wagered on the total.

Memphis Tigers Betting Analysis

To say Memphis’ season is on the line on Thursday night is not an exaggeration. The Tigers had a goal of reaching a Bowl Game this season, and need to win two of their final three games to be Bowl eligible. After their matchup with Tulsa, Memphis faces a gimme versus North Alabama, but finishes versus a very strong SMU program.

The Tigers are in this must-win position after a 35-28 loss to UCF in Week 10. The team put up 433 yards of offense and won the time of possession battle, but were sunk by a pair of turnovers and a leaky run defense.

Memphis QB Seth Henigan threw two interceptions, while the Tigers yielded 204 rushing yards to the Knights. Memphis ranks 100th overall in scoring defense for the season, and 79th in opponent yards per play. They’re allowing opponents to convert over 43% of their third downs, and are one of the 30 most penalized teams in the nation.

Offensively, the outlook is much more positive. The Tigers average 34 points per game and rank 43rd in total offense. Henigan ranks 16th in the nation in passing yards as a sophomore, with 16 passing TD and four rushing scores.

He’s averaging 334 passing yards over his last three starts, however, he’s also been picked off six times during that stretch. If he can finish strong and clean up the turnovers, he could find himself as one of the preseason longshots in the Heisman Trophy odds next year.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Betting Analysis

Tulsa comes in following a 27-13 defeat to #19 Tulane. Like Memphis, run defense was largely responsible, but so too was the absence of starting QB Davis Brin. The senior pivot sat out due to a shoulder injury and his status for Thursday’s game on a short week is not looking promising.

Brin is currently questionable and if he can’t go Braylon Braxton will make his second straight start. The offense did not perform well with Braxton under center against the Green Wave, finishing with just 257 total yards.

The Golden Hurricane were outgained by 225 yards and lost the time of possession battle by 9 minutes. Tulsa enters play ranked 117th in scoring defense, and 120th against the run. They coughed up 357 rushing yards to Tulane, and 6.7 yards per carry.

Offensively, Tulsa averages 27 points per outing when healthy, but the downgrade from Brin to Braxton is significant. The ladder is completing only 51% of his passes, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt, compared to a 60% completion rate for Brin at 8.8 yards per attempt.

Tulsa vs Memphis Prediction

No matter which offensive stat or efficiency metric you look at, the outcome almost always favors Memphis – and that’s taking into account games Brin has played. The lone exception would be yards per completion, but that will completely be nullified if Brin sits.

The market is hammering Memphis as if Brin won’t play, but even if he does, the Tigers should handle the Golden Hurricane with ease. Memphis ranks 58th in the country and Tulsa hasn’t beaten a team ranked inside the top-100. Of the five top-100 programs they’ve faced, they’ve lost by an average of 15 points.

Pick: Memphis Tigers -6.5 (-110)
