The San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots are two teams who qualified for the playoffs last season but if the postseason started today, neither make the cut this time around. The good news is both have time to make up ground. On Sunday, the 49ers visit the Pats as the two sides will square off at Gillette Stadium at 4:25 PM ET.

The Patriots are a small favorite for this contest but who’s the best bet for this game?

Patriots Coming Off Big Upset

The Patriots entered last week as a big favorite over the Denver Broncos. The Pats were laying about 10 as they had extra time to prepare and the Broncos were banged up. New England had posted a record of 15-5 under Bill Belichick following a bye week but they completely flopped last Sunday.

The Patriots were playing from behind all day as their offense couldn’t get anything going. Cam Newton finished the day 17-of-25 for 157 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. The defense got stops in the red zone but Denver still kicked six field goals. Quite frankly, had it not been for two brutal Drew Lock interceptions late in the game, the final score would have been worse.

New England will have to take a good, long look in the mirror and figure out what they have on offense. This is a team that had just 14 first downs last week and 288 total yards with 117 of those coming on the final three drives. Other than Newton running the ball, this offense doesn’t do much effectively and that’s a concern.

49ers Got Right Versus Rams

The 49ers have produced some ugly efforts this season but finally looked like the 2019 team in their win over the Los Angeles Rams. Their defense held Jared Goff to 19-of-38 for 198 yards, two touchdowns and a pick while their offense finally cooked, scoring 24 points and picking up 390 yards.

All eyes were on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was benched the previous week in a 43-17 blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins. Against the Rams, Garoppolo was 23-of-33 for 268 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He missed a couple of throws but for the most part, looked sharp again.

Of course, all eyes will be on him again as Garoppolo will be facing his former team. The Patriots traded him away in 2017 as they opted to stick with Tom Brady.

What’s The Best Bet?

We’re looking at a game here where points should be at a premium. New England scored 36 against the Las Vegas Raiders and 30 on the Seattle Seahawks, but have scored a total of 43 points combined in their other three contests. Newton is 27th in QBR and the offense is 20th in terms of converting third downs.

As for the 49ers, their offense got back on track last week but it still wasn’t explosive. The team is now without running back Raheem Mostert while players like tackle Trent Williams and Garoppolo are expected to play, but less than 100%.

Both defenses in this game rank among the nine best in terms of yards per game allowed. Look for the defenses to help keep this game under the number.

Best Bet: Patriots (-148)
