As they take their 0-4 record to the field for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders described the campaign so far as “the world of suck.”

The last two seasons, Denver went 6-10 and 5-11. The Broncos are 20-32 since winning Super Bowl 50.

Things to do in Denver when you’re dead? Apparently, bet on the Broncos.

Broncos Trending Upward?

In last week’s 26-24 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver quarterback Joe Flacco passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, the Broncos accumulated five sacks, two of them from Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller.

It was a considerable step up from the first three weeks, when Denver became the first NFL team in 50 years to go through the first three weeks of the season without a sack or a takeaway.

Chargers tackles Trent Scott and Sam Tevi have endured their struggles this season in pass coverage, so Miller might have himself a field day on Sunday.

Don’t Blame Rivers for Chargers’ Struggles

The Chargers, picked by some pundits to be a Super Bowl favorite entering the season, are middling 2-2 through the first month of the NFL season.

That’s not the fault of quarterback Philip Rivers, though.

Rivers, 37, owns a passer rating of 105.8. He’s passed for 1254 yards and seven touchdowns against only two interceptions. In four games, only the Detroit Lions have held him under 300 yards in passing.

This week figures to offer Rivers his toughest test of the season, however. A veteran Denver secondary including Chris Harris, Kareem Jackson and Justin Simmons rates #5 in the NFL in pass defense. They’ve allowed just 200 yards per game.

Last season, the Broncos accounted for four of Rivers’ 12 interceptions.

Gordon in for Chargers

Ending his 64-day holdout, Chargers running back Melvin Gordon suited up last week’s 30-10 win against the Miami Dolphins but didn’t play.

LA coach Anthony Lynn indicated that Gordon would be part of this week’s offensive gameplan, but didn’t further elaborate regarding how many snaps of how many touches he hoped to get for Gordon.

Gordon was good for just 111 yards and zero TDs from 28 carries in two games against Denver last season. His replacement Austin Ekeler has gained 490 yards from scrimmaged and scored six TDs in four games.

Chubb Out for Broncos

Denver outside linebacker Bradley Chubb was getting some love as a potential NFL sack leader entering the season. Instead, his season is done after barely a month.

Chubb suffered a torn ACL in last week’s game against the Jaguars.

Is Denver Worth a Wager?

The Chargers are the second-worst NFL home team against the spread since 2014, going a collective 11-21-1. That includes a 6-10-1 slate since relocating from San Diego to LA.

The Broncos are 12-4 straight up in their last 16 games against the Chargers. They’re 6-2 SU in their last eight road games against the Chargers.

The sharps are on to something. Take Denver and the 6.5 points.

Pick: Denver Broncos +6.5 (-119)
