Chargers Switch To Herbert

The Chargers’ lone win on the season came when Tyrod Taylor started under center, but after a fluke injury and three weeks of solid performances from Herbert, the team made the switch. Herbert has been effective, completing 72% of his passes while throwing for at least 290 yards each week.

He has a rocket of an arm and while he’s still making mistakes (one interception in each of his three starts), Herbert has also given this passing game a lot of life. Taylor was supposed to be a conservative game manager (he had just 208 passing yards in his lone start). Even with that outing, the Chargers have the seventh-ranked passing offense, thanks to Herbert.

The Chargers have been close each of the last three weeks – similar to how they were many times last season – but it’s not good enough. They blew a lead at home to Kansas City, played poorly against the Carolina Panthers but still only lost by five, and then blew another big lead on the road at Tampa Bay last week.

Being close is a good sign but the losses are piling up.

Saints Get Back On Track Versus Lions

The Saints started the year with a win over the Bucs, but lost two in a row after that. Things looked ugly early on in Detroit last Sunday as they trailed 14-0 in the first quarter but everything turned after that. The Saints scored 35 unanswered points and held on for a 35-29 victory.

A big key for the Saints was getting their passing game going, which had been struggling without star wideout Michael Thomas in the lineup. They got on track against the Lions as quarterback Drew Brees went 19-of-25 for 246 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. He finally built some rapport with Emmanuel Sanders, who had six catches for 93 yards.

The Saints haven’t been above .500 since Week 1 but this will be a great opportunity for them to get back there as they’re a sizeable favorite at home.

What’s The Best Bet?

We’re looking at total of 50 in this game and the lean is to the over. The Chargers are only giving up 23.8 points per game this season but the Saints offense is tough to slow down. The Saints have scored at least 24 in every game and scored 30 or more in three of their four outings.

Keep an eye on the status of Saints wideout Michael Thomas, who is questionable. The over becomes a stronger play if he’s in but even if he’s out, given the rhythm the Saints’ offense showed in the second half last week, they should be able to get to their season average and get to the over with some help from the Chargers.

Prediction: Over 50.5 points (-105)
