There may be a quarterback controversy brewing with the New York Giants, but two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning doesn’t see it that way.

Manning, 38, is entering his 16th NFL season on a Giants team clearly rebuilding its franchise. One of the prospects making tremendous strides is rookie QB Daniel Jones, who Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur suggested could give Manning a run for his money as starting quarterback heading into the upcoming NFL campaign.

“I don’t feel like it’s a competition,” Manning told NFL.com in a recent interview. “I’ve always approached practice every day to improve, to earn my place on the team.”

Daniel Jones +500

Manning is an overwhelming favorite to be the Giants’ starting QB in Week 1 of the NFL season. Oddsmakers list the four-time Pro Bowl pivot at -1000 to be the starting quarterback in the opening week of the season.

Is there any value in betting on Jones at +500?

While Manning has been regarded as a solid pocket passer throughout his career, Jones brings similar qualities with a much bigger arm and more mobility.

Early Impact for Jones

Jones, who’s primarily been taking snaps with the second-team offense, continues to lack the accuracy that would make him a legitimate every day starting NFL quarterback.

Shurmur has still been impressed with what he’s seen from Jones this early into training camp, adding the Duke product has “exceeded expectations.”

Yet, Shurmur has still been impressed with what he’s seen from Jones this early into training camp, adding the Duke product has “exceeded expectations.” In one of the team’s training camp red zone workouts, Jones went 8-for-13 passing but failed to throw a TD pass.

The Giants have no intentions of rushing Jones in to the starting QB role, which hurts the rookie’s chances of replacing Manning in Week 1.

Manning Still Valuable

Manning’s longevity has helped him remain consistent heading into his 16th season with the Giants. Manning has missed just one regular season game since the 2005 season and has put up 4,000 or more passing yards seven times along the way.

Last season, Manning had 4,299 yards passing and a completion rating of 66.0 with 21 touchdowns.

However, Manning was sacked more than ever before, hitting the turf 47 times in 2018. The team faces challenges on the offensive line and Manning is likely to have much more pressure in the 2019 season.

Similar to when Dak Prescott dethroned Tony Romo in Dallas, Manning faces similar pressure with Jones waiting in the wings.

It just won’t happen so early in the season. Manning may not be the starting QB when the regular season is complete, but he will be No. 1 when the 2019 NFL season kicks off.

Pick: Eli Manning (-1000)
