The Philadelphia Eagles’ season hangs in the balance as they prepare to battle the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football as 7.5-point underdogs.

The Eagles travel west in search of their first win of the season after being forced to settle for a 23-23 tie with the Cincinnati Bengals last weekend.

The 49ers return home as  -345 moneyline favorites after recording back-to-back road wins over the New York Giants and New York Jets, but remain hobbled by a rash of injuries to key personnel on both sides of the ball. Game time is set for 8:20 Eastern, with the weather forecast at Levi’s Stadium calling for clear skies and warm temperatures.

Focus on Wentz as Eagles’ Winless Slide Continues

The Eagles needed a scoring run from quarterback Carson Wentz in the dying seconds to eke out a 23-23 tie with the Bengals last week, and now takes a 0-2-1 SU record into Sunday night’s contest.

Philadelphia is now winless in four straight,  a run that has contributed to the team’s steady slide in the Eagles vs 49ers odds after opening as 6-point underdogs . But with their NFC East rivals combining to win just two total games through the first three weeks of the season, the Eagles can return to the thick of the divisional race with a win in San Francisco.

However, Philadelphia must overcome a number of enormous challenges. After emerging as one of the NFL’s highest scoring teams over the final month of last season, the Eagles offense has sputtered this time around, averaging just under 20 points per game through Week 3.

Carson Wentz has emerged as a lightning rod for criticism, and with good reason. Wentz has struggled horribly with his accuracy, connected on just 59.8% of pass attempts, and just three scoring passes against six picks. The second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft has enjoyed little help, with the Eagles offensive line allowing him to be sacked 11 times to date.

Receiving Corps Plagued By Injuries

Things get no easier on Sunday night, with receivers DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffrey, and Jalen Reagor all confirmed as out. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson’s plan to give JJ Arcega-Whiteside more responsibility amid all those injuries is also in peril, with the second-year receiver listed as doubtful with a calf injury.

That could result in the Eagles placing a greater emphasis on their ground game on Sunday night. Miles Sanders has been one of the bright spots during Philly’s shaky start, running for 95 yards in each of his two appearances this season, and adding 48 total receiving yards. With the 49ers’ rush defense struggling at times in the early go, twice surrendering over 100 yards, Sanders is worth a look as a -112 bet to run for OVER 63.5 yards, and sports short +100 odds of finding the end zone at least once.

Philadelphia has come up big in recent meetings with the 49ers, claiming SU victory in six of eight overall meetings, and in four of their past five visits to San Francisco. However, the Eagles have wilted under the bright lights on Sunday Night Football in recent years, going 3-8 SU in their past 11 appearances.

Hobbled Niners Benefit from Favorable Schedule

While all that is good news for sports bettors loyal to San Francisco, the 49ers face issues of their own heading into Sunday night.

Injuries have decimated the Niners lineup, with the list of wounded players including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, rusher Raheem Mostert, cornerback Richard Sherman, and DE Dee Ford.

However, the 49ers have benefited from a favorable schedule early on. The Niners came up big defensively during their two-week visit to New York, surrendering just 258 total yards per game and 22 total points in lopsided wins over the lowly Jets and Giants. And despite their injury woes, the Niners could be poised to run up the score on Sunday night.

Nick Mullens was also steady taking over in place of Jimmy G last week, piling up 343 passing yards and one TD. Mullens now sits as a safe -182 bet to toss for more multiple scores on Sunday, as the 49ers add to the Eagles’ woes with a decisive victory.

Best Bets: 49ers -7.5 (-115); UNDER 45.0 (-110)
